O estudo do desenvolvimento da carreira das mulheres contribuiu de forma
significativa para o enriquecimento da investigação em Psicologia Vocacional (e.g. Fitzgerald, Fassinger & Betz, 1995; Betz & Fitzgerald, 1987; Osipow, 1983; Betz & Hackett, 1981, 1983). Apesar da investigação e teoria neste âmbito terem tomado exclusivamente a figura masculina como objecto de estudo, posteriormente, alguma investigação focou-se também na aplicabilidade de teorias do desenvolvimento de carreira
existentes às mulheres (e.g. Holland, 1973; Super, 1957), o que forneceu avanços conceptuais significativos na descrição e explicação do desenvolvimento da carreira naquele grupo da população. Neste artigo apresentamos uma revisão dos modelos e variáveis que caracterizam o desenvolvimento da carreira das mulheres, reflectindo
sobre as tendências mais recentes de investigação neste domínio, bem como, sobre a pertinência do estudo desta temática para a intervenção psicológica individual e social. The study of women career development has brought a large contribution
for the empowerment Vocational Psychology research (e.g. Fitzgerald, Fassinger &
Betz, 1995; Betz & Fitzgerald, 1987; Osipow, 1983; Betz & Hackett, 1981, 1983).
Although the research and theory in this field has taken exclusively the male figure
as a subject of study, later on, some research focused also on the applicability of
the career development theories to women (e.g. Holland, 1973; Super, 1957). This
provided significant conceptual advances in the description and explanation of the
career development in that group of the population. This article presents a review
of the patterns and variables that characterize the career development of women, reflecting
about the most recent trends of research in this domain as well as about the relevance
of the study of this issue for the individual psychological and social intervention.
