Perscrutando espólios antigos: a anta de Sobreira 1 (Elvas)

Boaventura, Rui; Ferreira, Maria Teresa; Silva, Ana Maria

A datação relativa e absoluta colocam a utilização deste sepulc...

Fish-based groups for ecological assessment in rivers: the importance of enviro...

Matono, Paula; Bernardo, João Manuel; Ferreira, Maria Teresa; Formigo, Nuno; Raposo Almeida, Pedro; Ilhéu, Maria

The use of river-types is of practical value, serving as groups for which assessment procedures can be developed and applied. An abiotic typology was set by the Portuguese Water Agency, mainly based on 6 major morphoclimatic regions. However, to be biologically meaningful, this typology should fit the distribution patterns of the biological quality elements communities proposed in Water Framework Directive unde...

Natural variability of lotic Mediterranean ecosystems or wildfire perturbations...

Pinto, Paulo; Ferreira, Maria Teresa; Caraça, Rute; Pedro, Ana; Novais, Maria Helena; Morais, Manuela; Robinsons, C. T.

This study evaluates the impacts of wildfires in lotic Mediterranean ecosystems. It was carried out at Monchique ridge after big wildfires occurred during 2002 and 2003. Deferential impacts were evaluated comparing historical results obtained before the wildfires (1999 and 2001), with the post fire ones (2006 and 2007). Physical and chemical parameters of the water, habitat morphology, diatoms, macrophytes, mac...

Measuring ecological change of aquatic macrophytes in Mediterranean rivers

Dodkins, Ian; Aguiar, Francisca; Rivaes, Rui; Albuquerque, António; Rodriguez-Gonzalez, Patricia; Ferreira, Maria Teresa

A metric was developed for assessing anthropogenic impacts on aquatic macrophyte ecology by scoring macrophyte species along the main gradient of community change. A measure of ecological quality was then calculated by Weighted Averaging (WA) of these species scores at a monitoring site, and comparison to a reference condition score. This metric was used to illustrate the difficulties of developing aquatic macr...

Modelling stream-fish functional traits in reference conditions: regional and l...

Oliveira, João; Segurado, Pedro; Santos, José M.; Teixeira, Amílcar; Ferreira, Maria Teresa; Cortes, R.

Identifying the environmental gradients that control the functional structure of biological assemblages in reference conditions is fundamental to help river management and predict the consequences of anthropogenic stressors. Fish metrics (density of ecological guilds, and species richness) from 117 least disturbed stream reaches in several western Iberia river basins were modelled with generalized linear models...

Subsidy or stress ? Tree structure and growth in wetland forests along a hydrol...

Rodriguez-Gonzalez, Patricia Maria; Stella, John Christopher; Campelo, Filipe; Ferreira, Maria Teresa; Albuquerque, António

In forested wetlands, hydrology exerts complex and sometimes compensatory influences on tree growth. This is particularly true in semi-arid ecosystems, where water can be both a limiting resource and a stressor. To better understand these relationships, we studied hydrologic and edaphic controls on the density, growth, tree architecture and overall productivity of forested wetlands dominated by the tree species...
