Routine screening of harmful microorganisms in beach sands: implications to pub...

Sabino, Raquel; Rodrigues, R.; Costa, I.; Carneiro, C.; Cunha, M.; Duarte, A.; Faria, N.; Ferreira, F. C.; Gargaté, M. J.; Júlio, C.; Martins, M. L.

Beaches worldwide provide recreational opportunities to hundreds of millions of people and serve as important components of coastal economies. Beach water is often monitored for microbiological quality to detect the presence of indicators of human sewage contamination so as to prevent public health outbreaks associated with water contact. However, growing evidence suggests that beach sand can harbor microbes ha...

Imported African histoplasmosis by Histoplasma capsulatum var. duboisii in an H...

Toscano, C.; Batista, J.; Carvalho, R.; Espírito-Santo, C.E.; Marcos, R.; Sabino, R.; Verissimo, C.; Viana, I.; Marques, T.

Objectives: African histoplasmosis caused by the fungus Histoplasma capsulatum var. duboisii, is a rare endemic mycosis occuring in western and central regions of sub-Saharian Africa. For unknown reasons, although HIV infection and H. capsulatum var. duboisii coexist in Africa, this coinfection remains rare. In Europe, diagnosed cases of African histoplasmosis are all imported. We describe a case of African his...

Surveillance of environmental fungi, with focus on Aspergillus, in a Portuguese...

Sabino, Raquel; Viegas, C.; Veríssimo, C.; Martins, C.; Clemons, K.V.; Stevens, D.A.

Objectives: Because immunocompromised patients are more prone to acquire nosocomial infections caused by fungi isolated from the environment, e.g. Aspergillus, this study aimed to screen the hospital environment for the presence of fungi and to understand their epidemiology in the different hospital wards analyzed. Methods: During one-year period, four seasonal samplings, i.e., air and hard surface, were perfo...

Screening of cryptic species among clinical Aspergillus isolates collected duri...

Sabino, R.; Veríssimo, C.; Parada, H.; Clemons, K.V.; Stevens, D.A.

Objectives: Correct identification of Aspergillus species is important given that sibling species may show variable susceptibilities to multiple antifungal drugs and also because sharper definition of species may facilitate epidemiological studies. Thus, we screened Aspergillus clinical isolates from Portuguese hospitals to determine which, if any, of the cryptic species of Aspergillus were involved in patient ...

Contribuição para o controlo da infeção nosocomial de Candida parapsilosis por ...

Sabino, R.; Sampaio, P.; Viegas, C.; Veríssimo, C.; Pais, C.

Fungal infections constitute a relevant problem in hospitals from all over the world. Their easy transmission through the air, water, or by direct or indirect contact with contaminated persons, surfaces or objects lead to an increasing preoccupation with those infections, particularly in immunocompromised patients. Regarding the enormous importance of Candida parapsilosis as agent of bloodstream infections and ...

Possible respiratory infection due to Aspergillus in workers from swineries and...

Recent epidemiologic studies clearly outline the link between fungal sensibilization and exarcebations of asthma, leading to increased morbidity and mortality. Amongst the filamentous fungi, Aspergillus scpecies have been strongly linked with exarcebations of asthma and other respiratory allergic diseases. Particles of approximately 1 to 4 pm are deposited in the lower respiratory tract. Therefore, conidia of A...

Effects of fungal contamination on respiratory symptoms of poultry workers

Faísca, Vanessa Mateus; Carolino, Elisabete; Sabino, Raquel; Veríssimo, C.; Viegas, Carla

Exposure to certain fungi (molds) can cause human illness by 3 specific mechanisms: generation of a harmful immune response, direct infection by the organism or/and toxic-irritant effects from mold byproducts. Moulds are considered central elements in daily exposure of poultry workers and can be the cause of an increased risk of occupational respiratory diseases, like allergic and non-allergic rhinitis and asthma.

Pathogenic fungi: an unacknowledged risk at coastal resorts? New insights on mi...

Whilst the potential impact on beach users from microorganisms in water has received considerable attention, there has been relatively little investigation into microbial contaminants in sand. Thirty three beaches across Portugal were analyzed during a five year period (2006–2010) to determine the presence of yeasts, pathogenic fungi, dermatophytes, total coliforms, Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci i...

Possíveis implicações da contaminação fúngica num aviário

Viegas, Carla; Viegas, Susana; Veríssimo, C.; Rosado, Laura; Santos, Carlos Silva

Are air-borne mycotoxins a public health concern in Portugal?

Viegas, Carla; Viegas, Susana; Sabino, Raquel; Casimiro, E.; Veríssimo, C.

Introduction - Microscopic filamentous fungi, under suitable environmental conditions, can lead to the production of highly toxic chemical substances, commonly known as mycotoxins. The most widespread and studied mycotoxins are metabolites of some genera of moulds such as Aspergillus, Penicillium and Fusarium. Quite peculiar conditions may influence mycotoxin biosynthesis, such as climate, geographical location...
