We report a new methodology to produce activated carbons from biomass-derived hydrothermal carbons using air and carbon dioxide. The activation step is crucial to develop porosity in the hydrothermal carbons. Additionally different surface functionalities are also introduced on the surface of the final materials. Our method based on initial hydrothermal carbonization of lignocellulosic biomass (walnut shell, su...

Serrabulho, Lurdes; Valente Nabais, Joao; Raposo, Joao; Gaspar de Matos, Margarida

The social, occupational, familiar and emotional changes during emerging adulthood, can affect adherence to diabetes management tasks and quality of life of young adults with type 1 diabetes. Aims The objectives consisted on the evaluation of behaviours and lifestyles, psychological adaptation and social support of young adults with type 1 diabetes. Methods This research included a quantitative study with 278 ...

Produção de materiais de carbono a partir de carbonização hidrotérmica

Laginhas, Carlos; Valente Nabais, Joao; Carrott, Peter; Ribeiro Carrott, Manuela

No presente trabalho é reportado a produção e caracterização de carvões activados por um processo de carbonização hidrotérmia a partir de açucares simples e complexos.

The Portuguese Diabetes Association is the world’s oldest diabetes association and a senior Member Association of the International Diabetes Federation. From the moment it was founded, early in the 20th century, to the present day, the Associação has been driven by a single overarching objective: to improve the quality of life of people with diabetes. Involved nationally in diabetes advocacy and the provision o...

HYDROTHERMAL CARBONIZATION AS AN EFFECTIVE WAY OF DENSIFYING THE ENERGY CONTENT...

Valente Nabais, Joao; Roman, Silvia; Laginhas, Carlos; Ledesma, Beatriz; Gonzalez, Juan

Hydrothermal carbonization processes were studied under different conditions using two different biomass materials: walnut shell and sunflower stem. Coalification under mild conditions was promoted with the aim of increasing the calorific value of the solid hydrochar. Hydrocarbonization processes brought up an increase on the heating value of the materials up to 28.9 and 29.3 MJ kg−1, for sunflower stem and wal...

The adsorption of fluoxetine onto activated carbons (ACs) prepared from almond tree pruning by steam and CO2 activation under different temperature conditions (650– 9508C), was studied. In both series increasing the temperature caused an increase in the BET apparent surface area, yielding ACs with SBET up to 870 and 710m2 g 1 after steam and CO2 activation, respectively. Also, a slight widening of the porosity ...

Removal of amitriptyline from aqueous media using activated carbons

Valente Nabais, Joao; Ledesma, Beatriz; Laginhas, Carlos

This paper reports the removal of amitriptyline, a widely used tricyclic anti-depressant, from aqueous solutions by six activated carbons produced from cork, coffee endocarp and eucalyptus pulp. The results of this study showed that samples from cork and eucalyptus pulp, activated at 800 °C, exhibited the highest adsorption capacity of 120 mg/g and 110 mg/g, respectively. Samples produced from coffee endocarp s...

Production and characterization of activated carbons made from sunflower stems

Valente Nabais, Joao; Laginhas, Carlos; Carrott, Peter; Ribeiro Carrott, Manuela

Activated carbons (ACs) are artificial materials, prepared from natural or synthetic precursors that are worldwide extensively used. The ACs main characteristics are the noticeable adsorption capabilities provided by the highly developed porous structure and the rich surface chemistry. Because of their versatility and properties the final material can be tailored to have specific properties suitable for a wide ...

Diabetes is the most worldwide common chronic disease, according the International Diabetes Federation [1], more than 32 million citizens living in the European Union have diabetes, representing nearly 10% of the population, to which we should add equal number of people suffering from impaired glucose tolerance. Diabetes prevalence is growing at alarming rate worldwide, being of particular relevance the type 2 ...

PRODUCTION OF CARBON MATERIALS BY CONJUNCTION OF HYDROTHERMAL AND ACTIVATION PR...

Valente Nabais, Joao; Laginhas, Carlos; Carrott, Peter; Ribeiro Carrott, Manuela; Titirici, Magdalena; Roman, Silvia

Activated Carbons (AC) are traditionally produced by chemical or physical activation processes, frequently using biomass materials as precursors [1]. These procedures can be modified in order to create particular surface characteristics (both textural and chemical), so that the adsorption of a given organic or inorganic compound is optimized. Recently, the use of hydrothermal carbonization processes (HTC) to pr...
