The introduction of exotic species in islands is recognized as a major threat to native biota and ecosystems. In this contribution we list thirteen widespread exotic invertebrate species (two Araneae, one Orthoptera, four Hemiptera, four Coleoptera and two Diptera) that were recorded from the Azorean Islands in the last few years for the first time. In addition, we list another ten invertebrate species (two Ara...

This short communication presents new records of four species of armoured scale insects (Diaspididae) which were recently collected from the Azores Islands. Two of these species, indicated below by an asterisk, are here reported for the first time from these islands. Voucher specimens of these records are deposited in the Coccoidea Collection of the first author.

Prey availability in time and space is a driving force in life history evolutio...

Copyright © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.. ; Environmental constraints can be determinant key factors conditioning predator life history evolution. Prey seems to have conditioned life history evolution in their ladybird predator, with the predators of aphids apparently presenting faster development, greater fecundity and shorter longevity than species preying on coccids. However a rigorous comparis...

Voracity of Coccinella undecimpunctata: effects of insecticides when foraging i...

Cabral, Susana; Soares, António O.; Garcia, Patrícia

Copyright © Springer-Verlag 2011. ; Coccinella undecimpunctata L. is a euryphagous predator established in Azores that offers interesting potential as a control agent in the context of integrated pest management (IPM). However, to further develop IPM against aphids, it is important to evaluate the effects that insecticides might have on voracity. Thus, we proposed to evaluate the effects of pirimicarb and pyme...

Invasions by ladybugs, ladybirds, and other predatory Coleoptera

Evans, Edward W.; Soares, António O.; Yasuda, Hironori

Copyright © International Organization for Biological Control (IOBC) 2011. ; Species of predatory Coleoptera have become abundant in new geographic regions recently, raising concerns for invaded ecosystems. We address this topic by focusing on invasive alien ladybird beetles (Coccinellidae; known also as ladybugs). Humans appear directly or indirectly responsible for all or most ladybird invasions. Factors hyp...

Harmonia axyridis: what will stop the invader?

Soares, António O.; Borges, Isabel; Borges, Paulo A. V.; Labrie, Geneviève; Lucas, Éric

Copyright © International Organization for Biological Control (IOBC) 2007. ; In recent years Harmonia axyridis (Pallas, 1773) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) has become a very popular insect among biological control practitioners and scientists, not only for its potential to be an efficient biological control agent but also because it is considered invasive. Individuals of this species were deliberately introduced...

New records of Coccinellidae (Coleoptera) to the Azores islands

Soares, António O.; Borges, Isabel; Cabral, Susana; Figueiredo, Helena; Resendes, Roberto

XII Expedição Científica do Departamento de Biologia - Pico 2005. ; In order to record new Coccinellidae species to the Azores, forty one samplings were made in S. Miguel, Graciosa and Pico islands. Graciosa and Pico islands surveys were performed during the scientific expeditions organised by the Department of Biology from the University of the Azores, between the 7th and 15th of June, 2004 and the 6th and 15...

Fitness of five phenotypes of Harmonia axyridis PALLAS (Coleoptera: Coccinelidae).

Serpa, Luís; Shanderl, Henrique; Brito, Carlos P.; Soares, António O.

Proceedings of the 8th International Symposium on Ecology of Aphidophaga: Biology, Ecology and Behaviour of Aphidophagous Insects. ; H. axyridis is a highly polymorphic ladybird beetle with phenotypes that vary in their elytral patterns. In natural populations the relative frequency of phenotypes is not constant, but is subject to a strong geographic and temporal variation. The selective forces that are the ba...

Influence of prey quality on the reproductive capacity of two phenotypes of Har...

Soares, António O.; Coderre, Daniel; Schanderl, Henrique

Proceedings of the 8th International Symposium on Ecology of Aphidophaga : Biology, Ecology and Behaviour of Aphidophagous Insects, Ponta Delgada 1-6 September 2002. ; H. axyridis is a highly polymorphic ladybird beetle with a wide geographical distribution in the palearctic region. Genetic polymorphism seems to be the strategy adopted in order to face different habitats at different times. In this paper we su...
