Driving forces for changes in geographical distribution of Ixodes ricinus ticks...

Medlock, J.M.; Hansford, K.M.; Bormane, A.; Derdakova, M.; Estrada-Peña, A.; George, J-C; Golovljova, I.; Jaenson, T.G.; Jensen, J-K; Jensen, P.M.

Many factors are involved in determining the latitudinal and altitudinal spread of the important tick vector Ixodes ricinus (Acari: Ixodidae) in Europe, as well as in changes in the distribution within its prior endemic zones. This paper builds on published literature and unpublished expert opinion from the VBORNET network with the aim of reviewing the evidence for these changes in Europe and discusses the many...

Electromagnetic properties of the Delta(1232) and decuplet baryons in the self-...

T. Ledwig; António José dos Santos Silva; M. Vanderhaeghen

We examine the electromagnetic properties of the Delta(1232) resonance within the self-consistent chiral quark-soliton model. In particular we present the Delta form factors of the vector-current GE0, GE2 and GM1 for a momentum-transfer range of $Q^{2} \leq 1GeV^{2}$. We apply the symmetry-conserving quantization of the soliton and take 1/N_c rotational corrections into account. Values for the magnetic moments ...

Striatal and extrastriatal atrophy in Huntington's disease and its relationship...

Ruocco,H.H.; Lopes-Cendes,I.; Li,L.M.; Santos-Silva,M.; Cendes,F.

Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder that affects the striatum most severely. However, except for juvenile forms, relative preservation of the cerebellum has been reported. The objective of the present study was to perform MRI measurements of caudate, putamen, cerebral, and cerebellar volumes and correlate these findings with the length of the CAG repeat and clinical par...

Ticks on dogs and its role as vectors: intermediate hosts in the Center-West of...

Rosa, Fernanda; Crespo, Maria Virgínia; Ferreirinha, Dario; Morgado, Marina; Madeira, Marta; Santos-Silva, M.; Sousa, R.

Dogs are one of the most important hosts in the maintenance of tick population. In order to identify the species and their role on the transmission of hemoparasites and rickettsiae, ticks were collected on 466 dogs of Center- West region of Portugal. Taxonomical studies were done and appositional hemolymph smears were also performed in order to search for rickettsia infections. Some ticks were processed for DNA...
