The aim of this work was the material characterisation of wall paintings and biodegradation assessment, including the analysis of microbial growth and the effect of microbial proliferation, in view of their conservation. The methodology was applied to the study of frescoes dated from 1531, located in the ancient parish church of Santo Aleixo, Southern Portugal. The combined use of optical microscopy, SEM-EDS an...

Rosado, T; Gil, M; Mirão, J; Candeias, A; Caldeira, A Teresa

Oxalate film formation is a pathology that often occurs in mural paintings and may result from the concomitant action of microorganisms and environmental conditions. Low Choir of the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Saudação (Portugal) has mural paintings with an extraordinary beauty, which over time have been suffered polychromy degradation and biofilm formation, presenting an ideal case study to investigate the ro...

As part of the research undertaken on easel and mural paintings by or attributed to Thomás Luis (c.1565-c.1612), an interdisciplinary diagnostic is presented in this paper regarding tow sixteenth-century fresco-ceilings at Palácio dos Condes de Basto, actual Fundação Eugénio de Almeida (FEA), attributed to this artists by Vítor Serrão [3, 4]: “Tomada de La Goleta” and “Armas”. Aiming their safeguard pathologies...

Vanadium pentoxide effects on stress responses in wine Saccharomyces cerevisiae...

Rosado, T; Conim, A; Alves-Pereira, I; Ferreira, R

Vanadium pentoxide mainly used as catalyst in sulphuric acid, maleic anhydride and ceramics industry, is a pollutant watering redistributed around the environment. Research on biological influence of vanadium pentoxide has gained major importance because it exerts toxic effects on a wide variety of biological systems. In this work we intent to evaluate the effects of vanadium pentoxide ranging from 0 to 2 mM in...

Evidence of a bimodal effect on Saccharomyces cerevisiae UE-ME3 by vanadium (V)...

Alves-Pereira, I; Rosado, T; Ferreira, R

The aim of this work was to evaluate the effects of five V2O5 medium concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 2.0 mM on cell viability, redox status and antioxidants enzymes of wine yeast S. cerevisiae UE-ME3. A slightly decrease of yeast cells growth rate for 0.5 and 1.0 mM, and a significantly decrease for 1.5 and 2.0 mM were observed. Conversely, a significantly increase of G6PD activity and GSH/GSSG ratio for 0.5...
