Taxonomic resolution and Biological Traits Analysis (BTA) approaches in estuari...

Alves, A. S.; Verissimo, H.; Costa, M. J.; Marques, J. C.

The taxonomic and functional structure of the subtidal nematode assemblages from a temperate estuary (Mondego estuary, Portugal) was studied, focussing on different taxonomic levels (genus, family and order), on single functional groups and on multiple biological traits. Based on taxonomic levels and on four biological traits (feeding type, life strategy, tail and body shape), the analysis of the nematode assem...

Systematic processes of land use/land cover change to identify relevant driving...

Teixeira, Zara; Teixeira, Heliana; Marques, J. C.

Land use and land cover (LULC) are driving forces that potentially exert pressures on water bodies, which are most commonly quantified by simply obtained aggregated data. However, this is insufficient to detect the drivers that arise from the landscape change itself. To achieve this objective one must distinguish between random and systematic transitions and identify the transitions that show strong signals of ...

Biophysical probing of Spartina maritima photo-system II changes during prolong...

Duarte, B.; Santos, B.; Marques, J. C.; Caçador, I.

Submergence is one of the major constrains affecting wetland plants, with inevitable impacts on their physiology and productivity. Global warming as a driving force of sea level rise, tend to increase the submersion periods duration. Photosynthesis biophysical probing arise as an important tool to understand the energetics underlying plant feedback to these constrains. As in previous studies with Spartina marit...

Structure, growth and production of a remarkably abundant population of the com...

Souza, A. T.; Dias, E.; Campos, J.; Marques, J. C.; Martins, I.

The common goby, Pomatoschistus microps, is a relevant species from estuarine food webs, playing important roles as predator of polychaetes and crustaceans and as prey for larger fishes and crustaceans. The Minho estuary (NW Portugal) is a relatively wellpreserved and productive system. To assess the population structure and production of P. microps in this estuary, monthly samples were undertaken in three diff...

Temporal changes in macrofauna as response indicator to potential human pressur...

Bessa, Filipa; Gonçalves, Sílvia C.; Franco, João N.; André, José N.; Cunha, Pedro P.; Marques, J. C.

Sandy beaches are natural dynamic ecosystems, which are becoming worldwide increasingly disturbed by intensive human direct use, coastal development and erosive evolution. In this study, we have examined whether ten years of potential increased human pressures have resulted in significant changes in the macrofaunal assemblages’ structure and composition of two mesotidal sandy beaches (Cabedelo – urban beach, an...

Insignificant impact of prescribed fire on surface soil in a Pinus pinaster pla...

Castro, Ana Cristina Meira; Shakesby, R.; Marques, J. Espinha; Santos, N.; Šmid, M.; Meixedo, João Paulo; Teixeira, J.; Chaminé, Helder I.; Doerr, S. H.

Following a prescribed fire in a Pinus pinaster forest site located in the north-west Portugal, monitoring of any changes in selected soil characteristics and soil hydrology was undertaken to assess the effects of burning on the following: pH, electrical conductivity, water content, organic carbon and porosity. Thirty plots were established on a regular grid. At each sample plot before and after the fire, sampl...

Atypical Phenotype in Two Patients with LAMA2 Mutations

Marques, J; Duarte, S; Costa, S; Jacinto, S; Oliveira, J; Oliveira, M; Santos, R; Bronze-da-Rocha, E; Silvestre, AR; Calado, E; Evangelista, T

Congenital muscular dystrophy type 1A is caused by mutations in the LAMA2 gene, which encodes the a2-chain of laminin. We report two patients with partial laminin-a2 deficiency and atypical phenotypes, one with almost exclusive central nervous system involvement (cognitive impairment and refractory epilepsy) and the second with marked cardiac dysfunction, rigid spine syndrome and limb-girdle weakness. Patients ...

Stent for Life in Portugal: This initiative is here to stay

Pereira, H; Pinto, FJ; Calé, R; Pereira, E; Marques, J; Almeida, M; Mello, S; Dias Martins, L

AIMS: Portugal has one of the lowest rates of primary percutaneous coronary intervention (p-PCI) in Western Europe. This study assessed the progress of Portuguese p-PCI performance indicators one year after Portugal joined the Stent for Life (SFL) initiative. METHODS AND RESULTS: Two national surveys were carried out, each covering a period of one month: the first when Portugal joined the SFL in 2011 (Moment Ze...

Testotoxicose Familiar: Dois Casos Clínicos

Marques, J. Sales; Campos, R. A.
