Towards a joint strategy for Iberian oak agroforestry systems: acknowledging th...

Pulido, F.; Pinto-Correia, T.; Ribeiro, N.; Potes, J.; Moreno, G.; Beaufoy, G.

Presentation ; The Iberian working oak woodlands (dehesas and montados) are outstanding High Nature Value (HNV) farming systems in a European context. However, management practices applied are not always appropriate to maintain their sustainability. Ensuring tree regeneration, soil protection, and landscape mosaics are essential for their long-term conservation. Policy measures should bear this in mind and con...

This chapter summarized explores in vivo use of a piezoelectric polymer for bone mechanical stimulation

A new piezoelectric actuator induces bone formation in vivo: a preliminary study

Reis, J; Frias, C; Canto e Castro, C; Botelho, ML; Marques, AT; Simões JA, JA; Capela e Silva, F; Potes, J

This in vivo study presents the preliminary results of the use of a novel piezoelectric actuator for orthopedic application. The innovative use of the converse piezoelectric effect to mechanically stimulate bone was achieved with polyvinylidene fluoride actuators implanted in osteotomy cuts in sheep femur and tibia. The biological response around the osteotomies was assessed through histology and histomorphomet...

Piezoelectric actuators for bone mechanical stimulation: exploring the concept.

Reis, J; Frias, C; Capela e Silva, F; Potes, J; Botelho, ML; Canto e Castro, C; Marques, AT; Simões, JA

Arthroplasty is liable to cause intense changes on strain levels and distribution in the boné surrounding the implant, namely stress shielding. Several solutions have been proposed for this, namely design variations and development of controlled-stiffness implants. A new approach to this problem, with potential application to other orthopaedic problems and other medical fields, would be the development of smart...

Effect of condensed tannin ingestion in sheep and goat parotid saliva proteome

Lamy, E; da Costa, G; Santos, R; Capela e Silva, F; Potes, J; Pereira, A; Coelho, AV; Sales Baptista, E

Saliva appears as a defence mechanism, against potential negative effects of tannins, in some species of animals which have to deal with these plant secondary metabolites in their regular diets. This study was carried out to investigate changes in parotid saliva protein profiles of sheep Ovis aries)and goats (Capra hircus), induced by condensed tannin ingestion. Five Merino sheep and five Serpentina goats were ...

Carbon nanotubes are highly versatile materials; new applications using them are continuously being developed. Special attention is being dedicated to the possible use of multiwalled carbon nanotubes in biomaterials contacting with bone. However, carbon nanotubes are also controversial in regards to effects exerted on living organisms. Carbon nanotubes can be used to improve the tribological properties of polym...

Expressão da caderina na discondroplasia tibial

Capela e Silva, F; Lamy, E; Pereira, A; Potes, J; Cabrita, AS

By immunohistochemistry the expression of a pan-cadherin antibody that recognizes a wide variety of cadherins in chondrocytes from normal and tibial dyschondroplasia (TD) growth plates was compared. Surprisingly, an upregulated expression that was not expected in TD lesion chondrocytes was observed. The reason for this apparent upregulation is not clear. The increased expression may simply be due to the particu...

Expressão imunoistoquímica da proteína S-100 na discondroplasia da tíbia

Capela e Silva, F; Lamy E, E; Reis, J; Potes, J; Pereira, A; Cabrita AS, AS

It was compared, by immunohistochemistry, the expression of S-100 protein from normal and tibial dyschondroplasia (TD) growth plates. The results suggest that S-100 may be involved in growth plate homeostasis. The expression of S-100 in dyschondroplastic chondrocytes may be due to a low level of calcium in the lesion and/or compression of chondrocytes by the accumulated matrix. One further possibility is the as...
