Constant and alternating temperature effects on germination and early growth of...

Dias, A.S.; Dias, L.S.; Pereira, I.P.

Scorzonera is a threatened species in Portugal. Given the role of temperature in germination and seedling recruitment, the performance of total germination, lag of germination, duration of germination, shape of germination, root and hypocotyl length, and relative root growth of scorzonera was investigated under constant and alternating temperatures between 10 and 25ºC. Because of scorzonera’s rarity and threate...

Deficiências minerais em Scorzonera hispanica. Sintomas e efeitos no crescimento

Dias, A.S.; Pereira, I.P.; Dias, L.S.

Activity of water extracts of Cistus ladanifer and Lavandula stoechas in soil o...

Dias, A.S.; Dias, L.S.; Pereira, I.P.

The phytoactivity of water extracts of C. ladanifer and L. stoechas on P. minor germination, as observed under controlled conditions, was lost in soil. Conversely, early growth of wheat and P. minor was sensitive to water extracts of C. ladanifer and L. stoechas. Nevertheless, because of differential effects on early growth of the weed and crop, L. stoechas unlike C. ladanifer, is worth searching for inhibitors...

Research on allelopathy in Portugal

Dias, L.S.; Pereira, I.P.; Dias, A.S.

The review shows that allelopathy is widespread in shrubs and trees of Portugal and hence, may play an important role in their ecology. The role of soil in the nature and intensity of allelopathy was demonstrated, and the potential of wheat straw and some aromatic plants to provide allelochemicals for herbicidal use has been found. Therefore, future lines of research should include I) the investigation of herbi...

Evaluation of Mediterranean-type vegetation for weedicide activity

Dias, L.S.; Pereira, I.P.; Dias, A.S.

Important differences were found in the response of wheat and lettuce to the treatments, with wheat being generally unaffected. Conversely, a better agreement was found between the sensitivity of lettuce and P. minor. In three (C. villosa, C. ladanifer, and L. stoechas) out of the five donors bioassayed in both species, the same type of answer was found, with an amplification of the effect when P. minor was use...

Effect of heat treatments on the germination of Cistus ladanifer L.

Pereira, I.P.; Dias, A.S.; Dias, L.S.

Seeds of Cistus ladanifer were subjected to heat treatments by exposure to temperatures ranging from 10 C to 150 C during 15 minutes, and then incubated in controlled conditions. Final germination increased with temperature with an observed maximum at 90 C, decreasing very quickly thereafter, with no germination at 130 C or higher temperatures. In the case of this aromatic shrub the rupture of seed coats could ...
