Carbon balance estimation for agroforestry land use alternatives in Portugal

Crous-Duran, J.; Paulo, J.A.; Palma, J.H.N.

Poster ; In 2005, 11% of the anthropogenic greenhouse gases emissions (GHG) were originated from agricultural activities and this value is expected to increase in the future. Besides the contribution for the restoration of soil productivity and for the improvement of conditions in degraded land, Agroforestry is also proposed as one of the main solutions for the mitigation of the GHG emissions and their effect ...

Innovating tree plantation design: spiralographing agroforestry

Palma, J.H.N.; Crous-Duran, J.; Merouani, H.; Paulo, J.A.; Tomé, M.

Poster ; Most of forestry or agroforestry artificial plantations either have an orthogonal design, or curvilinear under contour lines to prevent soil erosion. These designs are known to maximize machinery workflow or erosion control respectively. As in many occasions in land use management, what optimizes machinery operation is not what optimizes prevention of soil loss and vice versa. An alternative and int...

Palma, J.H.N.; Paulo, J.A.; Sendim, A.

Presentation ; In the last decades there has been a tendency to classify agroforestry systems to help focus on particular aspects of different practices with specific objectives. However, in practice, the management of land use at farm scale has a wide range of options and decisions to be made at operational level following a certain strategy. Farmers can adopt certain agroforestry practices to suit and enhan...

VIBRATIONAL SPECTROSCOPY (FTIR-ATR AND FT-RAMAN) - A Rapid and Useful Tool for ...

Pereira, Leonel; Amado, Ana M.; Ribeiro-Claro, Paulo J. A.; van de Velde, Fred

The wide industrial application of phycocolloids (e.g. alginates, agar and carrageenans) is based on their particular properties to form gels in aqueous solution. Recently, new spectroscopic techniques have provided more accurate identification of the natural composition of the polysaccharides produced by these seaweeds. With the combination of two spectroscopic techniques (FTIR-ATR and FT-Raman) it is possible...

Hubinger,Míriam D.; Vivanco-Pezantes,David; Kurozawa,Louise E.; Sobral,Paulo J. A.
