Using project six sigma and lean concepts in internal logistics

Antunes, Daniela Sofia Lopes; Sousa, Sérgio; Nunes, Eusébio P.

Lean logistics and continuous improvement methodologies, such as Six Sigma, are key subjects to reduce non added value activities and improve intrinsic processes in the supply chain of an organisation. The aim of this work is to identify the variables influencing the quality and performance of raw material supply process throughout a case study to propose improvements to reduce the number of process defects. To...

Quantification of uncertainty of performance measures using graph theory

Lopes, Isabel da Silva; Sousa, Sérgio; Nunes, Eusébio P.

In this paper, the graph theory is used to quantify the uncertainty generated in performance measures during the process of performance measurement. A graph is developed considering all the sources of uncertainty present in this process and their relationship. The permanent function of the matrix associated with the graph is used as the basis for determining an uncertainty index.

Maintenance costs of a pitch control device of a wind turbine

Carvalho, Mariana; Nunes, Eusébio P.; Telhada, José

Although the wind turbines are nowadays the principal source of wind energy production, the technical information publicly known about these machines is still very scarce. Information related to failure modes, unavailability and maintenance costs of these systems remain confidential and only the manufacturer has knowledge about them. To be able to optimize the efficiency, to guarantee the security and to negoti...

Data quality assessment in performance measurement

Sousa, Sérgio; Nunes, Eusébio P.; Lopes, Isabel da Silva

Data quality is a multi-dimensional concept and this research will explore its impact in performance measurement systems. Despite the large numbers of publications on the design of performance measurement systems (PMSs) and the definition of critical success factors to develop Performance Measures (PMs), from the data user perspective there are possibilities of finding data quality problems, that may have a neg...

Diagnosis of quality problems in a small business

Teixeira, Humberto N.; Lopes, Isabel da Silva; Nunes, Eusébio P.

This article presents the results of a study conducted in a small textile company. The study aimed to characterize the state of quality management in the company highlighting weaknesses and areas for improvement. The methodology employed makes use of a set of tools for data collection and analysis such as interviews, flowcharts, diagrams of process analysis, defects registry matrix, Failure Modes and Effects An...

Reliability engineering of large jit production systems

Faria, José; Nunes, Eusébio P.

This paper introduces the rationale and the fundamental elements and algorithms of a reliability engineering methodology, and discusses its application to the design of a large, multi-cell and heterogeneous production system with just-in-time (JIT) deliveries. The failure analysis and the non-reliability costs assessment of such systems is a complex task. In order to cope with such complexity, a two level hiera...

Application of the three realities approach to customer complaints analysis in ...

Soares, João Cláudio Ferreira; Sousa, Sérgio; Nunes, Eusébio P.

This work main objective is to adapt and apply the three realities approach (Gemba, Genbutsu, and Genjitsu) to the analysis of field quality problems in a motorcycle industry and gain advantage with regard to the quality of the product on the market (quality management) and transfer to partners financial responsibilities regarding the origins of these problems (management of warranty costs). The three realities...

Maintenance decision making

Carvalho, Mariana Teixeira Baptista de; Nunes, Eusébio P.; Telhada, José

In any management process, decision making assumes a very important dimension. Complex systems are commonly fed with large amounts of data that are quickly made available to experts and industrial engineers who, in most cases, are not provided with adequate decision support tools. Therefore, the quality of their decisions heavily relies on their our quality and experience, making the complex systems management ...

RAM factors in the operation and maintenance phase of wind turbines

Cajazeira, Carolina Leite Barbosa; Nunes, Eusébio P.; Telhada, José; Carvalho, Mariana Teixeira Baptista de

The high complexity of technological systems and the increasing requirement and competitiveness of markets request the implementation of adequate management strategies for these systems in order to improve their availability and productivity. In this context, RAM factors constitute a strategic approach for integrating reliability, availability and maintainability, by using methods, tools and engineering techniq...

Quality improvement practices adopted by industrial companies in Portugal

Lopes, Isabel da Silva; Nunes, Eusébio P.; Sousa, Sérgio; Esteves, Dina

Abstract— In an increasingly competitive market, companies have the need to seek and implement best practices to continuously improve their processes. Recently, several quality management tools and quality improvement methodologies have emerged in literature. However, there is a gap between theory and practice. This study aims to assess to what extent the methodologies and tools cited in literature are used by ...
