Sensitivity analysis in a dengue epidemiological model

Rodrigues, Helena Sofia; Monteiro, M. Teresa T.; Torres, Delfim F. M.

Epidemiological models may give some basic guidelines for public health practitioners, allowing the analysis of issues that can influence the strategies to prevent and fight a disease. To be used in decision making, however, a mathematical model must be carefully parameterized and validated with epidemiological and entomological data. Here an SIR (S for susceptible, I for infectious, and R for recovered individ...

Bioeconomic perspectives to an optimal control dengue model

Rodrigues, Helena Sofia; Monteiro, M. Teresa T.; Torres, Delfim F. M.

A model with six mutually exclusive compartments related to dengue is studied. Three vector control tools are considered: insecticides (larvicide and adulticide) and mechanical control. The basic reproduction number associated to the model is presented. The problem is studied using an optimal control approach. The human data are based on the dengue outbreak that occurred in Cape Verde. Control measures are simu...

Dengue in Cape Verde : vector control and vaccination

Rodrigues, Helena Sofia; Monteiro, M. Teresa T.; Torres, Delfim F. M.

In 2009, for the rst time in Cape Verde, an outbreak of dengue was reported and over twenty thousand people were infected. Only a few prophylactic measures were taken. The e ects of vector control on disease spreading, such as insecticide (larvicide and adulticide) and mechanical control, as well as an hypothetical vaccine, are estimated through simulations with the Cape Verde data.

Vaccination models and optimal control strategies to dengue

Rodrigues, Helena Sofia; Monteiro, M. Teresa T.; Torres, Delfim F. M.

"accepted 16-Oct-2013" ; As the development of a dengue vaccine is ongoing, we simulate an hypothetical vaccine as an extra protection to the population. In a rst phase, the vaccination process is studied as a new compartment in the model, and di erent ways of distributing the vaccines investigated: pediatric and random mass vaccines, with distinct levels of e cacy and durability. In a second step, the vaccin...

Solving a signalized traffic intersection problem with NLP solvers

Melo, Teófilo; Matias, João; Monteiro, M. Teresa T.

Mathematical Programs with Complementarity Constraints (MPCC) finds many applications in areas such engineering design, economic equilibrium and mathematical theory itself. In this work we consider a queuing system model resulting from a single signalized traffic intersection regulated by pre-timed control in an urban traffic network. The model is formulated as an MPCC problem and may be used to ascertain the o...

Numerical optimization experiments using the hyperbolic smoothing strategy to s...

Melo, Teófilo; Matias, João; Monteiro, M. Teresa T.

In this work we solve Mathematical Programs with Complementarity Constraints using the hyperbolic smoothing strategy. Under this approach, the complementarity condition is relaxed through the use of the hyperbolic smoothing function, involving a positive parameter that can be decreased to zero. An iterative algorithm is implemented in MATLAB language and a set of AMPL problems from MacMPEC database were tested.

Numerical experiments with a modified regularization scheme for mathematical pr...

Melo, Teófilo; Matias, João; Monteiro, M. Teresa T.

On this paper we present a modified regularization scheme for Mathematical Programs with Complementarity Constraints. In the regularized formulations the complementarity condition is replaced by a constraint involving a positive parameter that can be decreased to zero. In our approach both the complementarity condition and the nonnegativity constraints are relaxed. An iterative algorithm is implemented in MATLA...

Geodesic regression on spheres : a numerical optimization approach

Machado, L.; Monteiro, M. Teresa T.

In this paper we address the problem of finding a geodesic curve that best fits a given set of time-labeled points on a sphere. Since the corresponding normal equations are highly non-linear, we formulate the problem as a constrained nonlinear optimization problem and solve it using the routine fmincon from MATLAB with the SQP (Sequential Quadratic Programming) algorithm.

Dengue disease, basic reproduction number and control

Monteiro, M. Teresa T.; Torres, Delfim F. M.; Zinober, Alan; Rodrigues, Helena Sofia

Dengue is one of the major international public health concerns.Although progress is underway, developing a vaccine against the disease is challenging. Thus, the main approach to fight the disease is vector control. A model for the transmission of dengue disease is presented. It consists of eight mutually exclusive compartments representing the human and vector dynamics. It also includes a control parameter ...

Métodos numéricos : exercícios resolvidos aplicados à engenharia e outras ciências

Monteiro, M. Teresa T.
