Outcomes of choledochal cysts with or without intrahepatic involvement in child...

Congo, K; Lopes, MF; Oliveira, PH; Matos, H; Basso, S; Reis, A

Background. Type I and type IV-A choledochal cysts (CC) in Todani's classification are the most frequent types of CC. Unlike type I cyst, in which the dilatation is confined to the extrahepatic bile duct, type IV-A affects both extra and intrahepatic ducts. Aim. To review our experience of complete cyst excision with Roux-en-Y hepaticojejunostomy for the treatment of type I and type IV-A CC in childhood, in ord...

Type II reaction in leprosy, or erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL), is often characterized by severe clinical symptoms together with nerve function impairment leading to permanent disabilities. Thalidomide has been shown to be a highly effective drug for the treatment of ENL. It is, however, contraindicated for women of childbearing age due to its teratogenicity. On the other hand, pentoxifylline, used to treat hy...

It has been suggested that iron overload may be carcinogenic. In the present study, we evaluated the effect of plasma and prostate carotenoid concentration on oxidative DNA damage in 12-week-old Wistar rats treated with intraperitoneal (ip) ferric nitrilotriacetate (Fe-NTA) (10 mg Fe/kg). Plasma ß-carotene and lycopene concentrations were measured as a function of time after ip injection of carotenoids (10 mg k...

Techniques involving supercritical carbon dioxide have been successfully used for the formation of drug particles with controlled size distributions. However, these processes show some limitations, particularly in processing aqueous solutions. A diagram walking algorithm based on available experimental data was developed to evaluate the effect of ethanol on the efficiency of water removal processes under differ...

Whole body irradiation before bone marrow transplantation.

Jorge, L; Departamento de Radioterapia, Instituto Português de Oncologia de Francisco Gentil, Lisboa.; Pereira, M E; de Matos, H; Patrício, M B

Preliminary results of hiperfraccionated total body irradiation (TBI) in eleven patients with acute leukemia (mean age 11.4 years) as conditioning for allogeneic bone marrow transplantation are presented. The linear accelerator was always used for photon irradiation in 3 daily fractions of 120 cGy, to a total dose of 1320 cGy in 4 days. With a follow-up of 3-24 months we obtained good results. The average time ...
