Arbutus unedo, Prunus spinosa, Rosa micrantha and Rosa canina are good sources of phenolic compounds, including anthocyanins. These compounds have potent antioxidant properties, which have been related to anticancer activity. Herein, the in vitro antioxidant and antitumor properties of enriched phenolic extracts (non-anthocyanin phenolic compounds enriched extract- PE and anthocyanins enriched extract- AE) of t...

Nutrients, phytochemicals and bioactivity of wild Roman chamomile: a comparison...

Guimarães, Rafaela; Barros, Lillian; Dueñas, Montserrat; Calhelha, Ricardo C.; Carvalho, Ana Maria; Santos-Buelga, Celestino; Queiroz, Maria João R.P.

Roman chamomile, Chamaemelum nobile L. (Asteraceae), has been used for medicinal applications, mainly through oral dosage forms (decoctions and infusions). Herein, the nutritional characterization of C. nobile was performed, and herbal material and its decoction and infusion were submitted to an analysis of phytochemicals and bioactivity evaluation. The antioxidant activity was determined by free radicals scave...

Infusion and decoction of wild German chamomile: bioactivity and characterizati...

Guimarães, Rafaela; Barros, Lillian; Dueñas, Montserrat; Calhelha, Ricardo C.; Carvalho, Ana Maria; Santos-Buelga, Celestino; Queiroz, Maria João R.P.

Natural products represent a rich source of biologically active compounds and are an example of molecular diversity, with recognized potential in drug discovery. Herein, methanol extract of Matricaria recutita L. (German chamomile) and its decoction and infusion (the most consumed preparations of this herb) were submitted to an analysis of phytochemicals and bioactivity evaluation. The antioxidant activity was ...

Characterization of phenolic compounds in wild fruits from Northeastern Portugal

Guimarães, Rafaela; Barros, Lillian; Dueñas, Montserrat; Carvalho, Ana Maria; Queiroz, Maria João R.P.; Santos-Buelga, Celestino

This study aimed to analyse the phenolic composition of wild fruits of Arbutus unedo (strawberry-tree), Prunus spinosa (blackthorn), Rosa canina and Rosa micrantha (wild roses). Analyses were performed by HPLC-DAD-ESI/MS. Prunus spinosa fruits presented the highest concentration in phenolic acids (29.78 mg/100 g dry weight), being 3-O-caffeoylquinic acid the most abundant one, and flavone/ols (57.48 mg/100 g), ...

Phenolic profile of wild fruits of Rosa canina SL. from Northeast Portugal

Guimarães, Rafaela; Barros, Lillian; Reis, Filipa S.; Dueñas, Montserrat; Carvalho, Ana Maria; Santos-Buelga, Celestino; Queiroz, Maria João R.P.

Plant polyphenols are a wide group of secondary metabolites and are a common component of our diet. Flavonoids represent the most common and widely distributed group of plant phenolics, and can be further broken into classes including flavones, flavonols, flavanones, flavanols, anthocyanins and isoflavonoids. Different classes of bioactive constituents are present in Rosa canina, including phenolic compounds. R...

Phenolic metabolites are common constituents of fruits and vegetables, and the interest of plant phenolic extracts derives from the evidence of their potent antioxidant activity and their wide range of pharmacologic properties including anticancer, antimicrobial and platelet aggregation inhibition activities. The fruits of Arbutus unedo L. are eaten raw or made in liqueurs (1 ]. In traditional folk medicine, th...

Phytochemicals and bioactivity in wild German and Roman chamomiles infusions

Guimarães, Rafaela; Barros, Lillian; Calhelha, Ricardo C.; Carvalho, Ana Maria; Queiroz, Maria João R.P.; Ferreira, Isabel C.F.R.

Natural matrices represent a rich source of biologically active compounds and are an example of molecular diversity, with recognized potential in drug discovery. In the present work, the infusions of Matricaria recutita L. (German chamomile) and Chamaemelum nobile L. (Roman chamomile) were submitted to an analysis of phenolic compounds and evaluation of bioactivity. Phenolic compounds were characterized by reve...

Phenolic profile of Arbutus unedo L. and Prunus spinosa L. wild fruits

Guimarães, Rafaela; Barros, Lillian; Dueñas, Montserrat; Carvalho, Ana Maria; Queiroz, Maria João R.P.; Santos-Buelga, Celestino

Phenolic compounds are commonly found in both edible and inedible plants, and they have been reported to have multiple biological effects. The interest of plant phenolics derives from the evidence of their potent antioxidant activity and their wide range of pharmacologic properties including anti-inflammatory, antiallergic and antibacterial activities. Flavonoids are a type of phenolic secondary metabolites wit...

Composition in anthocyanins of wild fruits from Northeastern Portugal

Guimarães, Rafaela; Barros, Lillian; Dueñas, Montserrat; Carvalho, Ana Maria; Queiroz, Maria João R.P.; Santos-Buelga, Celestino

Flavonoids represent the most common and widely distributed group of plant phenolic compounds, and can be further broken into classes including flavones, flavonols, flavanones, flavanols, isoflavonoids and anthocyanins (1). Anthocyanins are widespread in nature mainly in flowers, fruits and vegetables and are responsible for their orange, red and blue colors. They are nontoxic, water-soluble compounds of great ...
