Design optimization of cruciform specimens for biaxial fatigue loading

Baptista, Ricardo; Cláudio, Ricardo; Reis, L.; Guelho, I.; Freitas, M.; Madeira, J. F. A.

Com o apoio RAADRI. ; In order to correctly assess the biaxial fatigue material properties one must experimentally test different load conditions and stress levels. With the rise of new in-plane biaxial fatigue testing machines, using smaller and more efficient electrical motors, instead of the conventional hydraulic machines, it is necessary to reduce the specimen size and to ensure that the specimen geometry...

Use of Pillared Clay-Based Catalysts for Wastewater Treatment through Fenton-Li...

J. Herney-Ramírez; Luis M. Madeira

Clays, both natural and physical-chemically modified, are attractive materials for the preparation of supported catalysts. In this chapter, a review is made regarding the use of pillared interlayered clays (PILCs) in heterogeneous Fenton-like advanced oxidation processes. Their applications in pollutants degradation is summarized, with particular emphasis on the effect of the main operating conditions (e.g., in...

Comparison of nanosized gold-based and copper-based catalysts for the low-tempe...

Diogo Mendes; Hermenegildo Garcia; V. B. Silva; Adélio Mendes; Luís M. Madeira

In this paper the catalytic performances for the low-temperature water-gas shift reaction of Au/TiO2 type A (from World Gold Council), Au/CeO2 (developed at UPV-CSIC), CuO/Al2O3 (from BASF), and CuO/ZnO/ Al2O3 (from REB Research & Consulting) have been compared. The catalysts were characterized by different techniques such as Raman spectroscopy, BET surface area measurements, temperature-programmed reduction, a...

Toxicity of MCPA on non-green potato tuber calli

Peixoto, Francisco; Lopes, M.; Madeira, Vítor; Vicente, Joaquim

Abstract Growth of potato tuber calli cells (non-green) is inhibited by 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxyacetic acid (MCPA) as a consequence of perturbation of membrane integrity. MCPA also depresses ATP content with simultaneous increase of ADP and AMP, i.e., the energy charge is severely compromised. Cell redox state is also affected by MCPA, as a function of concentration. Up to 60 µM, MCPA stimulates glutathione re...

Effects of harrowing and fertilisation on understory vegetation and timber prod...

Carneiro, M.; Fabião, António; Martins, M.C.; Fabião, André; Silva, M. Abrantes; Hilário, L.; Lousã, M.; Madeira, M.

Harrowing and fertilisation are common practices at middle rotation in Eucalyptus globulus Labill. plantations in Central Portugal. In order to clarify the effects of such practices on understory vegetation and timber production, a field trial was installed in a 5-year-old first rotation eucalyptus plantation, in a region with mixed oceanic and Mediterranean climatic influences. Four treatments that involved ha...

Polymeric Membrane Reactors

José M. Sousa; Luis M. Madeira; João C. Santos; Adélio Mendes

The aim of this chapter is the study of membrane reactors with polymeric membranes, particularly catalytic polymeric membranes. After an introduction where the main advantages and disadvantages of the use of polymeric membranes are summarised, a review of the main areas where they have been applied, integrated in chemical reactors, is presented. This excludes the field of bio-membranes processes, which is analy...

An Impedance Study on the sPEEK/ZrO2 Membranes for Direct Methanol Fuel Cell Ap...

V. B. Silva; V. S. Silva; L. M. Madeira; S. P. Nunes; A. Mendes

Electrochemical impedance experiments were carried out in order to study the influence of the ZrO2 inorganic incorporation on the proton conductivity of sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (sPEEK) membranes. The impedance data was fitted to an extension of Randles' circuit, within the inorganic content and temperature ranges considered. The model fits quite well for ZrO2 loads up to 10 wt.%. Such a model allows...

Non-Fluorinated Membranes Thickness Effect on the DMFC Performance

Vasco Freitas Silva; Valter B. Silva; R. Reissner; S. Vetter; A. Mendes; L. M. Madeira; S. P. Nunes

In order to study the influence of the proton exchange membrane thickness on the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) performance, sulfortated poly (ether ether ketone) (sPEEK) membranes with a sulfonation degree (SD) of 42% and thicknesses of 25, 40, and 55 pm were prepared, characterized, and tested in a DMFC. These polymeric membranes were tested in a DMFC at several temperatures by evaluating the current-voltag...
