Analysis of the XENON100 dark matter search data

Aprile, E.; Alfonsi, M.; Arisaka, K.; Arneodo, F.; Balan, C.; Baudis, L.; Behrens, A.; Beltrame, P.; Bokeloh, K.; Brown, E.; Bruno, G.; Budnik, R.

The XENON100 experiment, situated in the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, aims at the direct detection of dark matter in the form of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), based on their interactions with xenon nuclei in an ultra low background dual-phase time projection chamber. This paper describes the general methods developed for the analysis of the XENON100 data. These methods have been used in ...

XENON

Aprile, E.; Giboni, K.-L.; Monzani, M. E.; Plante, G.; Yamashita, M.; Gaitskell, R. J.; Fiorucci, S.; Sorensen, P.; DeViveiros, L.; Bernstein, A.

The XENON experiment aims at the direct detection of dark matter in the form of WIMPs (Weakly Interacting Massive Particles) via their elastic scattering off Xenon nuclei. With 1 ton of LXe distributed in ten identical modules, the proposed XENON1T experiment will achieve a sensitivity more than a factor of thousand beyond current limits. The detectors are time projection chambers operated in dual (liquid/gas) p...

Angle, J.; Aprile, E.; Arneodo, F.; Baudis, L.; Bernstein, A.; Bolozdynya, A.; Coelho, L.; Dahl, E.; DeViveiros, L.; Ferella, A.; Fernandes, L.

The technique to realize 3D position sensitivity in a two-phase xenon time projection chamber (XeTPC) is described. Results from a prototype detector (XENON3) are presented. ; http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/B6TVD-4R68DXJ-13/1/c7a25befd9bec275706d42709c6eb3c6

Measurement of the photoelectron-collection efficiency in noble gases and methane

Coelho, L. C. C.; Ferreira, H. M. N. B. L.; Lopes, J. A. M.; Dias, T. H. V. T.; Ferreira, L. F. R.; Santos, J. M. F. dos; Breskin, A.; Chechik, R.

The photoelectron-collection efficiency from photocathodes in noble gases and methane is experimentally investigated. The ratio between the number of transmitted photoelectrons in the gas media and in vacuum is determined as a function of the applied reduced electric field E/p, where p is the gas pressure. Results are presented for He, Ne, Ar, Xe, Kr and CH4. ; http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/B6...

Operation of a single-GEM in noble gases at high pressures

Amaro, F. D.; Conceição, A. S.; Veloso, J. F. C. A.; Coelho, L. C. C.; Fernandes, L. M. P.; Ferreira, L. F. Requicha; Lopes, J. A. M.

We report the performance of a single-Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) operating in pure Ar, Xe, and in Ar-50lmbar Xe mixtures, in the range of 1-7lbar. The maximum gain and voltage that can be applied to the GEM are investigated as a function of filling pressure and compared to the results obtained with triple-GEM and MHSP (Micro Hole and Strip Plate) multipliers. The maximum gain achieved at 1lbar Xe is about 10...

Xenon GPSC high-pressure operation with large-area avalanche photodiode readout

Coelho, L. C. C.; Lopes, J. A. M.; Covita, D. S.; Conceição, A. S.; Santos, J. M. F. dos

The performance of a xenon high-pressure gas proportional scintillation counter (GPSC) instrumented with a large area avalanche photodiode (LAAPD) as the VUV-photosensor has been investigated for filling pressures from 1 up to 10 bar, for 22- and 60-keV photons. The LAAPD photosensor is placed directly within the xenon envelope, as a substitute for the photomultiplier tube, avoiding the constraints of the use o...

Performance of a large area avalanche photodiode in a liquid xenon ionization a...

Ni, K.; Aprile, E.; Day, D.; Giboni, K. L.; Lopes, J. A. M.; Majewski, P.; Yamashita, M.

Scintillation light produced in liquid xenon (LXe) by alpha particles, electrons and gamma-rays was detected with a large area avalanche photodiode (LAAPD) immersed in the liquid. The alpha scintillation yield was measured as a function of applied electric field. We estimate the quantum efficiency of the LAAPD to be 45%. The best energy resolution from the light measurement at zero electric field is 7.5%([sigma...

Ludhova, L.; Amaro, F. D.; Antognini, A.; Biraben, F.; Cardoso, J. M. R.; Conde, C. A. N.; Covita, D. S.; Dax, A.; Dhawan, S.; Fernandes, L. M. P.

An experiment measuring the 2S Lamb shift in muonic hydrogen ([mu]-p) was performed at the Paul Scherrer Institute, Switzerland. It required small and compact detectors for 1.9 keV X-rays (2P-1S transition) with an energy resolution around 25% at 2 keV, a time resolution better than 100 ns, a large solid angle coverage, and insensitivity to a 5 T magnetic field. We chose Large Area Avalanche Photodiodes (LAAPDs...

Detection of VUV photons with large-area avalanche photodiodes

Monteiro, C. M. B.; Fernandes, L. M. P.; Lopes, J. A. M.; Veloso, J. F. C. A.; Santos, J. M. F. dos

The room-temperature response of large-area avalanche photodiodes (LAAPDs) to 128- and 172-nm light pulses is investigated. The minimum detectable number of photons, which can produce a signal just above the noise level, is found to be around 1300 and 600 photons, respectively. The LAAPD relative statistical fluctuations in the detection of 15 000 photons of 128 nm and 25 500 photons of 172 nm were found to be ...
