Massive die-offs of freshwater bivalves as resource pulses

Sousa, Ronaldo; Varandas, S.; Cortes, R.; Teixeira, Amílcar; Lopes-Lima, Manuel; Machado, Jorge; Guilhermino, Lúcia

The winter of 2009/2010 was particularly severe in Northern Portugal resulting in higher river flow levels. A study was undertaken to assess the impact of this situation on several populations of freshwater bivalves (e.g., Anodonta anatina, Corbicula fluminea, Margaritifera margaritifera, Potomida littoralis and Unio delphinus) in the catchments of the Rivers Minho, Douro, Taˆ mega, Tua and Sabor. Massive die-o...

An in situ postexposure feeding assay with Carcinus maenas for estuarine sedime...

Moreira, Susana M.; Moreira-Santos, Matilde; Guilhermino, Lúcia; Ribeiro, Rui

This study developed and evaluated a short-term sublethal in situ toxicity assay for estuarine sediment-overlying waters, with the crab Carcinus maenas (L.) based on postexposure feeding. It consisted of a 48-h in situ exposure period followed by a short postexposure feeding period (30 min). A precise method for quantifying feeding, using the Polychaeta Hediste (Nereis) diversicolor Müller as food source, was f...

This multidisciplinary study presents the preliminary results of the structural geology and geotechnical studies of a granitic rock-mass block delimitation. In addition, hydrogeological and ecotoxicological methods were used to assess the nature and suitability for use of groundwater from spring horizontal galleries catchworks located in Porto urban area. These springs represented one of the main water supplies...

Castro, Bruno B.; Guilhermino, Lúcia; Ribeiro, Rui

The purpose of this study was to develop an in situ sediment bioassay chamber and respective procedures, suitable for performing toxicity bioassays with benthic invertebrates, using the midge Chironomus riparius. It was also our objective to compare the responses obtained under controlled conditions (laboratory 10-day larval growth and survival test) with those obtained in situ. Clean sand and a formulated sedi...

Acute Toxicity Test with Daphnia magna: An Alternative to Mammals in the Prescr...

Guilhermino, Lúcia; Diamantino, Teresa; Silva, M. Carolina; Soares, A. M. V. M.

In this study, the association between the acute toxicity of 15 compounds to Daphnia magna, expressed as 24- and 48-h LC50 values, and the corresponding oral LD50 values for the rat was tested. Since there was evidence of a strong relationship between the two species, the sample was extended to 54 cases by including the values for acute toxicity to D. magna and rat of more chemicals published by other authors. ...

Diamantino, Teresa C.; Guilhermino, Lucia; Almeida, Elisabete; Soares, Amadeu M. V. M.

As a result of a widespread application in numerous industrial processes, chromium is a contaminant of many environmental systems. Chromium and their compounds are toxic to both invertebrates and vertebrates and, for this reason, there has been a search for suitable and less toxic alternatives. Molybdenum compounds have been studied as alternative to chromium compounds for some industrial applications. The toxi...
