Incubation of anaerobic sludge with triolein or oleate in the presence of nitrate or sulphate led to an increased methane production, relatively to incubations without inorganic electron acceptor. Faster methane production was obtained in assays amended with nitrate. Methanogenesis occurred after the reduction of alternative electron acceptors.
Anaerobic degradation of long-chain fatty acids (LCFA) is essential for efficient biogas production from complex lipid-containing wastewaters. Methanogens play a key role in this process, but the general idea is that LCFA exert a toxic effect towards these microorganisms that impairs good methane recovery. In this work, the effect of saturated (palmitate, C16:0) and unsaturated (oleate, C18:1) LCFA towards hydr...
Phytochemical composition of Hypericum genus has been investigated for many years. In the recent past, studies on the essential oils (EO) of this genus have been progressing and many of them have reported interesting biological activities. Variations in the EO composition of Hypericum species influenced by seasonal variation, geographic distribution, phenological cycle and type of the organ in which EO are prod...
Tese de doutoramento em Ciências (ramo do conhecimento em Biologia) ; Apical buds and nodal segments, from plants grown in Nature were used as primary explants to establish in vitro shoot cultures of Hypericum androsaemum and Hypericum undulatum, respectively. Hypericum perforatum shoot cultures were established from nodal segments of axenic seedlings grown from seeds germinated asseptically on MS medium devoi...
