Twenty primiparous and multiparous Alpine breed goats at approximately 80 days of lactation were used in this experiment. The animals were housed individually in metal cages and distributed according to milk production in five 4 × 4 Latin squares. The experimental diets used in the experiment presented concentrate:forage ratio of 65:35. The treatments were characterized by increasing levels of 0, 33, 67 and 100...
The main goal of this study was to quantify the magnetic fabric on rock samples of the upper subunit of the Conraria Formation, Silves Group, in the region of Coimbra. Studies of Anisotropy of Magnetic Susceptibility (AMS) were carried out on 50 samples from 11 sites in order to characterise the magnetic fabric. The general parallelism between an oblate fabric and stratification may indicate a combination betwe...
Secondary hyperparathyroidism is a common complication of chronic kidney disease. The elevated serum intact parathyroid hormone, phosphorus, calcium and calcium x phosphorus product have been independently associated with an increased relative risk of mortality. The standard therapy for secondary hyperparathyroidism, including active vitamin D analogues and phosphate binders, is often insufficient to allow pati...
Myocarditis is one of the many possible forms of cardiac involvement in systemic lupus erythematosus. Its clinical presentation ranges from asymptomatic patients with self-limited disease to fulminant heart failure that can lead to death. In most cases treatment consists of supportive care only. The authors present the case of a patient with lupus myocarditis.
A total of 618 patients with end-stage renal disease received kidney transplants between 1980 and September 1996. Twenty eight of them were diabetics. Better results were achieved for type 1 diabetic patients than for type 2 (mortality: 5.9% vs 27.3%; functioning graft: 88.2% vs 72.7%). The morbility was also higher in those patients (infections: 81.8% vs 29.4%; vascular complications: 45.5% vs 17.6%). Actuaria...
In an eight years time period (July 1984-June 1992) CSF samples of 40718 patients were studied, and 610 were from patients with AIDS clinically diagnosed and immunologically confirmed through HIV antibodies detection. Among opportunistic infections detected in them 85 were CNS cryptococcosis. For the purpose of this study the CSF of these 85 patients are the AIDS group of CNS cryptococcosis. For comparison, CSF...
In a seven year time period (July 1984 to June 1991) were studied CSF samples of 36,216 new patients, 470 of them infected by HIV. Number of AIDS patients represents 1.30% of total cases examined in the laboratory during this time period. Normal CSF was observed in only 16 cases (3.4%). Associated pathologies occurred in 66% of cases. Opportunistic infections predominated among them (227 cases). Data support in...
HTLV-l antibodies were investigated in serum and in CSF of 150 patients with neurologic disorders mainly myelopathies. The patients were considered into three groups according to the possible relationship of their disease to the presence of HTLV-l antibodies: no relationship risk (control group), occasional risk group, and possible risk group. In this latter are 56 patients with crural spastic paraparesis or pa...
