Response of vitis vinifera cell cultures to phaeomoniella chlamydospora : chang...

Lima, M. R. M.; Ferreres, F.; Dias, Alberto Carlos Pires

Cell suspension cultures of Vitis vinifera cv. Vinhão (Vv) were used to study the putative response of V. vinifera to Phaeomoniella chlamydospora (Pc), a fungus frequently associated with esca and grapevine decline. Cells were elicited with a Pc autoclaved biomass extract and methyl jasmonate (MeJ). Phenolic production was evaluated by HPLC-DAD and HPLC-MS/MS. Phenolic production of Vv cells significantly chang...

Inflorescences of Brassicacea species as source of bioactive compounds: a compa...

Sousa, C.; Taveira, M.; Valentão, P.; Fernandes, F.; Pereira, J.A.; Estevinho, Leticia M.; Bento, Albino; Ferreres, F.; Seabra, R.M.; Andrade, P.B.

Two Brassica oleracea varieties (B. oleracea L. var. costata DC and B. oleracea L. var. acephala) and Brassica rapa L. var. rapa inflorescences were studied for their chemical composition and antioxidant capacity. Phenolic compounds and organic acids profiles were determined by HPLC–DAD and HPLC–UV, respectively. B. oleracea var. costata and B. oleracea L. var. acephala inflorescences presented a similar qualit...

Metabolic profiling and biological capacity of Pieris brassicae fed with kale (...

Fernandes, F.; Ferreres, F.; Oliveira, J.; Valentão, P.; Pereira, J.A.; Seabra, R.M.; Andrade, P.B.

Vegetables of the Brassica group are the most commonly grown and consumed worldwide. Food plants with apparent cancer and cardiovascular di sease-preventing properties include several varieties of Brassica oleraceae. The majority of the herbivorous insect species are specialized feeders, for which the behavioral decision to accept a plant as food or oviposition substrate is mainly related with sensory informati...

Ferreres, F.; Sousa, C.; Valentão, P.; Seabra, R.M.; Pereira, J.A.; Andrade, P.B.

Tronchuda cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. costata DC) seeds were studied for their chemical composition and antioxidant capacity. Thirteen phenolic compounds were characterized and quantified by reversed-phase HPLC-DAD-MS/MS-ESI and HPLC-DAD, respectively: two sinapoylgentiobiose isomers, three sinapoylglucose isomers, kaempferol-3-(sinapoyl)sophorotrioside-7-glucoside, sinapoylcholine, kaempferol-3,7-digluc...

Tronchuda cabbage flavonoids uptake by Pieris brassicae

Ferreres, F.; Sousa, C.; Valentão, P.; Pereira, J.A.; Seabra, R.M.; Andrade, P.B.

The flavonoid pattern of larvae of cabbage white butterfly (Pieris brassicae L.; Lepidoptera: Pieridae) reared on the leaves of tronchuda cabbage was analysed by HPLC-DAD-MS/MS-ESI. Twenty flavonoids were identified or characterised, namely 16 kaempferol and four quercetin derivatives. Kaempferol 3-O-sophoroside, a minor component of tronchuda cabbage, was found to be the main component in P. brassicae (15.8%)....

Screening of antioxidant compounds during sprouting of Brassica oleracea L. var...

Sousa, C.; Lopes, Graciliana; Pereira, D.M.; Taveira, M.; Valentão, P.; Seabra, R.M.; Pereira, J.A.; Baptista, Paula; Ferreres, F.; Andrade, P.B.

The changes in antioxidant compounds of Brassica oleracea L. var. costata DC seeds were monitored during the first twelve days of seedling development. Sprouts were screened at time intervals of two days for phenolic compounds and organic acids. The identified phenolic compounds included esters of sinapic acid with glucose, gentiobiose and kaempferol, as well as sinapoylcholine. The organic acids were oxalic, a...

Composição química e actividade antioxidante das folhas internas da couve tronc...

Pereira, J.A.; Sousa, C.; Ferreres, F.; Valentão, P.; Seabra, R.M.; Andrade, P.B.

Oliveira, Ivo; Sousa, A.; Valentão, P.; Andrade, P.B.; Ferreira, Isabel C.F.R.; Ferreres, F.; Bento, Albino; Seabra, R.M.; Estevinho, Leticia M.

Aqueous extracts of leaves of different hazel (Corylus avellana L.) cultivars (Cv. M. Bollwiller, Fertille de Coutard and Daviana), were analysed by reversed-phase HPLC/DAD for the definition of their phenolic composition. Antioxidant potential was assessed by the reducing power assay, and the scavenging effect on DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radicals and b-carotene linoleate model system. Their antimic...
