Abstract Besnoitia besnoiti, an obligate intracellular protozoan parasite belonging to the phylum apicomplexa, is the causative agent of bovine besnoitiosis. Besnoitiosis is responsible for significant losses in the cattle industry of Africa and Mediterranean countries due to the high morbidity rate, abortion and infertility in males. The acute stage of disease is associated with the proliferative forms (tachyz...
BOVINE besnoitiosis is caused by Besnoitia besnoiti, a coccidial protozoan (Fayer 1981, Tadros and Laarman 1982). Animals of all ages may be affected, but clinical disease is unusual in calves younger than six months of age (Bigalke 1968). The disease usually occurs sporadically, and most infections are subclinical (Pols 1960, Bigalke 1968).
Comunicação oral ; Lymnaea species and their infection by Fasciola gigantica were investigated at Santiago, St. Antão, S. Nicolau, Sal and Fogo Islands. The study of the fluctuations of Lymnaea natalensis populations and the prevalence of F. gigantica in the snail was performed between October/November 1994 and March/April 1999. At Santiago Island, Lymnaea natalensis was found in 20 habitats and F. gigantica i...
Bovine besnoitiosis is a parasitic disease caused by the protozoa Besnoitia besnoiti (Marotel, 1912) that presents an acute phase (with fever and anasarca) and a chronic phase (with sclerodermitis), and has been characterized by high morbidity and low mortality (Ferreira, 1985). A study on the presence of besnoitiosis was carried out in October 2001 on a beef cattle herd located in the Évora region. On this far...
Brucellosis is a zoonosis, reported for the first time in 1859 by Marston, in Malta. It has also been referred to as Mediterranean Fever, Malta Fever and Bang's disease. Its causative agent was isolated by David Bruce in 1886; this was Brucella melitensis: five different strains were later described: B. abortus, B. suis, B. ovis, B. neotomae and B. canis. Recently, in 1994, the isolation of Brucella was reporte...
