Operation of a single-GEM in noble gases at high pressures

Amaro, F. D.; Conceição, A. S.; Veloso, J. F. C. A.; Coelho, L. C. C.; Fernandes, L. M. P.; Ferreira, L. F. Requicha; Lopes, J. A. M.

We report the performance of a single-Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) operating in pure Ar, Xe, and in Ar-50lmbar Xe mixtures, in the range of 1-7lbar. The maximum gain and voltage that can be applied to the GEM are investigated as a function of filling pressure and compared to the results obtained with triple-GEM and MHSP (Micro Hole and Strip Plate) multipliers. The maximum gain achieved at 1lbar Xe is about 10...

Planar LAAPDs: temperature dependence, performance, and application in low-ener...

Ludhova, L.; Amaro, F. D.; Antognini, A.; Biraben, F.; Cardoso, J. M. R.; Conde, C. A. N.; Covita, D. S.; Dax, A.; Dhawan, S.; Fernandes, L. M. P.

An experiment measuring the 2S Lamb shift in muonic hydrogen ([mu]-p) was performed at the Paul Scherrer Institute, Switzerland. It required small and compact detectors for 1.9 keV X-rays (2P-1S transition) with an energy resolution around 25% at 2 keV, a time resolution better than 100 ns, a large solid angle coverage, and insensitivity to a 5 T magnetic field. We chose Large Area Avalanche Photodiodes (LAAPDs...

Detection of VUV photons with large-area avalanche photodiodes

Monteiro, C. M. B.; Fernandes, L. M. P.; Lopes, J. A. M.; Veloso, J. F. C. A.; Santos, J. M. F. dos

The room-temperature response of large-area avalanche photodiodes (LAAPDs) to 128- and 172-nm light pulses is investigated. The minimum detectable number of photons, which can produce a signal just above the noise level, is found to be around 1300 and 600 photons, respectively. The LAAPD relative statistical fluctuations in the detection of 15 000 photons of 128 nm and 25 500 photons of 172 nm were found to be ...

The X-ray performance of a driftless gas proportional scintillation counter usi...

Covita, D. S.; Simões, P. C. P. S.; Fernandes, L. M. P.; Freitas, E. D. C.; Ferreira, L. F. Requicha; Veloso, J. F. C. A.; Santos, J. M. F. dos

Performance characteristics are evaluated for a xenon driftless gas proportional scintillation counter (GPSC), for which detector pulses are formatted using very short shaping-time constants (~50 ns), and directly analyzed by the MCA without previous pulse time duration analysis and amplitude correction. The present detector and method allow the achievement of detector energy linearity and energy resolution sim...

X-ray spectrometry with Peltier-cooled large area avalanche photodiodes

Fernandes, L. M. P.; Lopes, J. A. M.; Santos, J. M. F. dos; Conde, C. A. N.

Performance characteristics of the response of a Peltier-cooled large-area avalanche photodiode are investigated. Detector gain, energy linearity, energy resolution and minimum detectable energy are studied at different operation temperatures. Detector energy resolution and lowest detectable X-ray energy present a strong improvement as the operation temperature is reduced from 25 to 15 °C and slower improvement...

Excess noise factor in large area avalanche photodiodes for different temperatures

Fernandes, L. M. P.; Lopes, J. A. M.; Santos, J. M. F. dos

The excess noise factor (ENF) of a large area avalanche photodiode was measured as a function of gain for different temperatures, in the -40 to 27°C range. Results show that ENF does not depend significantly with temperature attaining values of about 1.8 and 2.3 for gains of 50 and 300, respectively. ; http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/B6TJM-4CMMX05-D/1/34a0ba40f32ddab67adeb9313913fec4

Application of large-area avalanche photodiodes to X-ray spectrometry of muonic...

Fernandes, L. M. P.; Antognini, A.; Boucher, M.; Conde, C. A. N.; Huot, O.; Knowles, P. E.; Kottmann, F.; Ludhova, L.; Mulhauser, F.; Pohl, R.

Large-area avalanche photodiodes have been investigated as 1.9-keV X-ray detectors for the muonic hydrogen Lamb-shift experiment. We report experimental tests carried out for evaluation of the avalanche photodiode capabilities for X-ray detection in the intense radiation and low counting rate environment of experiments with muonic atoms. Several muonic atoms were used and it was shown that the electronic backgr...

Energy linearity response of CZT detectors to X-rays in the region of the Zn, C...

Freitas, E. D. C.; Cardoso, João M.; Fernandes, L. M. P.; Lopes, J. A. M.; Veloso, J. F. C. A.; Santos, J. M. F. dos

The response of a cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) detector to X-rays with energies around the Zn, Cd and Te K-absorption edges was investigated. The energy non-linearity in the detector response at the K-edges is less than 0.1%, within the experimental errors. No abrupt variation in both the w-value and the detector energy resolution was observed at the K-edges, a behaviour consistent with the absence of intrinsic...

Large area APDs for low energy X-ray detection in intense magnetic fields

Boucher, M.; Huot, O.; Knowles, P. E.; Ludhova, L.; Mulhauser, F.; Schaller, L. A.; Conde, C. A. N.; Santos, J. M. F. dos; Fernandes, L. M. P.

An experiment to measure the energy difference between the 2S-2P atomic levels (Lamb shift) in muonic hydrogen is being prepared at PSI. Since the energy levels of muonic hydrogen are a factor of 186 more energetic than those of hydrogen, according to the ratio of reduced masses, the transitions lie in the soft X-ray region. The experiment needs long-lived muonic hydrogen in the 2S state. This is achieved by st...
