Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is one of the most important pulse crops in the world as a source of protein for human consumption. In Mediterranean regions, chickpea is traditionally grown as a rainfed crop, thus highly dependent on rainfall. In this situation, supplemental irrigation may be applied. The objective of our study was to evaluate the improvement in crop yield and water productivity with supplemental...
Being a leguminous crop chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is important for the establishment of sustainable and economically viable farming systems. Chickpea is grown and consumed across five continents, making this crop more important in international markets than other food legumes. Adaptation trials of 15 accessions of chickpea, 13 from the ICARDA collection and 2 from the Portuguese national catalogue, took pla...
The responses of photosynthetic rate and leaf conductance to leaf temperature were evaluated in two contrasting chickpea genotypes (Elixir and FLIP03-46C) grown under field conditions (Elvas, Portugal). Photosynthetic performance was assayed with leaf temperatures ranging from 24ºC to 40º C under controlled VPD. Technical constraints and physiological implications are discussed.
The SALTMED model is one of the few available generic models that can be used to simulate crop growth with an integrated approach that accounts for water, crop, soil, and field management. It is a physically based model using the well-known water and solute transport, evapotranspiration, and water uptake equations. In this paper, the model simulated chickpea growth under different irrigation regimes and a Medit...
Trichodoridae are polyphagous root ectoparasites occurring worldwide. Their major pest status is as virus vector of Tobraviruses. Currently, the family has 102 species classified within 6 genera. The genus Trichodorus is the largest in number of species (56) and predominantly occurs in temperate regions. Traditional morphology-based taxonomy revealed for Europe, a very high species diversity within the Iberian...
Trichodoridae are polyphagous root ectoparasites occurring worldwide. Their major pest status is as virus vector of Tobraviruses. Currently, the family has 102 species classified within 6 genera. 88% of the species belong to the didelphic genera (females with two well developed genital branches) with the genus Trichodorus being the largest in number of species (56). Trichodorus species predominantly occur in t...
A PCR-RFLP assay was developed for the identification of trichodorids belonging to Nanidorus, Paratrichodorus and Trichodorus genera. Exploring the variability of the 18S SSU rDNA gene this method provides for the first time a molecular diagnosis tool alternative to the difficult and time consuming phenotyping especially of quite similar species, enabling selectivity in mixed samples with non-trichodorid specie...
An investigation was conducted to determine the effect of soil-born Tobacco rattle virus (TRV) isolates on yield and some quality attributes of 8 potato cultivars (Agata, Amorosa, Almera, Cunéria, Kondor, Picasso, Raja and Stemster) in Portuguese growing areas. Preliminary results revealed that some attributes (canopy growth, total yield, tuber numbers and yield within size grades, tuber spraing symptoms and se...
Exercise is a low-cost intervention that promotes health and contributes to the maintenance of the quality of life. The present study was designed to investigate the influence of different resistance exercise protocols on the nociceptive threshold of rats. Female Wistar rats were used to perform exercises in a weight-lifting exercise model. The following groups were examined (N = 6 per group): untrained rats (c...
