Comparative Efficiency Analysis of Referral Costs in

Portela, Maria; Thanassoulis, Emmanuel; Graveney, Mike

The aim of this paper is to compare English General Practitioner (GP) units in terms of their overall referral costs through Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). Results revealed potential cost savings and benchmark practices under 4 perspectives: ‘overall cost efficiency’, ‘technical efficiency’, ‘allocative efficiency’, and ‘price efficiency’.

Malmquist indexes using a geometric distance function (GDF). Application to a s...

Portela, Maria; Thanassoulis, Emmanuel

Traditional approaches to calculate total factor productivity (TFP) change through Malmquist indexes rely on distance functions. In this paper we show that the use of distance functions as a means to calculate TFP change may introduce some bias in the analysis, and therefore we propose a procedure that calculates TFP change through observed values only. Our total TFP change is then decomposed into efficiency ch...

Comparative efficiency analysis of Portuguese bank branches

Portela, Maria; Thanassoulis, Emmanuel

The advent of Internet banking and phone banking is changing the role of bank branches from a predominantly transaction- based one to a sales-oriented role. This paper reports on an assessment of the branches of a Portuguese bank in terms of their performance in their new roles in three different areas: Their efficiency in fostering the use of new transaction channels, their efficiency in increasing sales and t...

Developing a decomposable measure of profit efficiency using DEA

Portela, Maria; Thanassoulis, Emmanuel

In for-profit organizations efficiency measurement withreference to the potential for profit augmentation is particularly important as is its decomposition into technical, and allocative components. Different profit efficiency approaches can be found in the literature to measure and decompose overall profit efficiency. In this paper, we highlight some problems within existing approaches and propose a new measur...

Profitability of a sample of Portuguese bank branches and its decomposition int...

Portela, Maria; Thanassoulis, Emmanuel

The efficiency literature, both using parametric and non-parametric methods, has been focusing mainly on cost efficiency analysis rather than on profit efficiency. In for-profit organisations, however, the measurement of profit efficiency and its decomposition into technical and allocative efficiency is particularly relevant. In this paper a newly developed method is used to measure profit efficiency and to ide...

Finding closest targets in non-oriented DEA models: The case of convex and non-...

Portela, Maria; Borges, Pedro Castro; Thanassoulis, Emmanuel

This paper draws attention for the fact that traditional Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) models do not provide the closest possible targets (or peers) to inefficient units, and presents a procedure to obtain such targets. It focuses on non-oriented efficiency measures (which assume that production units are able to control, and thus change, inputs and outputs simultaneously) both measured in relation to a Free...

Comparative performance analysis of portuguese bank branches

Portela, Maria; Thanassoulis, Emmanuel

The advent of Internet banking and phone banking is changing the role of bank branches from a predominantly transaction-based one to a sales-oriented role. This paper reports on an assessment of the branches of a Portuguese bank in terms of their performance in their new roles in three different areas: Their effectiveness in fostering the use of new transaction channels such as the internet and the telephone, t...

Efficient and close targets in data envelopment analysis (DEA)

Portela, Maria Conceição A. S.; Borges, Pedro Castro; Thanassoulis, Emmanuel

This paper draws attention for the fact that traditional Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) models do not provide the closest possible targets (or peers) to inefficient units, and presents a procedure to obtain such targets. It focuses on non-oriented efficiency measures both measured in relation to a Free Disposal Hull (FDH) technology and in relation to a convex technology. The approaches developed for finding c...

School outcomes: Sharing the responsibility between pupil and school

Thanassoulis, Emmanuel; Portela, Maria

This paper uses a Data Envelopment Analysis based approach to decompose pupil under-attainment into that attributable to the school the pupil attends and that attributable to the pupil. The approach measures pupil attainment in terms of value added. Data on over 6700 A-level pupils from 122 English schools have been analysed. The results suggest that at current levels of school effectiveness a pupil’s own appli...

Decomposing school and school-type effciency

Portela, Maria; Thanassoulis, Emmanuel

This paper puts forward a Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) approach to decomposing a pupil’s under-attainment at school. Under-attainment is attributed to the pupil, the school and the type of funding regime under which the school operates. A pupil-level analysis is used firstly on a within school and secondly on a between school basis, grouping schools by type such as state-funded, independent and so on. Overal...
