Chronic stress disrupts neural coherence between cortico-limbic structures

Oliveira, João F.; Dias, N. S.; Correia, Mariana; Pereira, Filipa Gama; Sardinha, Vanessa Morais; Lima, Ana Raquel; Oliveira, Ana Filipa Martins

The authors would like to thank Rui Gomes for the help in the application of electrophysio- logical techniques and Luís Martins and Miguel Carneiro for the histological preparations. ; Chronic stress impairs cognitive function, namely on tasks that rely on the integrity of cortico-limbic networks. To unravel the functional impact of progressive stress in cortico-limbic networks we measured neural activity and ...

Stress affects theta activity in limbic networks and impairs novelty-induced ex...

Jacinto, L. R.; Reis, Joana Vanessa Santos dos; Dias, N. S.; Cerqueira, João; Sousa, Nuno

Exposure to a novel environment triggers the response of several brain areas that regulate emotional behaviors. Here, we studied theta oscillations within the hippocampus (HPC)-amygdala (AMY)-medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) network in exploration of a novel environment and subsequent familiarization through repeated exposures to that same environment; in addition, we assessed how concomitant stress exposure cou...

A low-power/low-voltage CMOS wireless interface at 5.7 GHz with dry electrodes ...

Dias, N. S.; Carmo, J. P.; Mendes, P. M.; Correia, J. H.

This paper describes a low-power/low-voltage CMOS wireless interface (CMOS-WiI) at 5.7 GHz with dry electrodes for congnitive networks. The electrodes are 4 x 4 microtip arrays and acquire electroencephalogram (EEG) signals in key- points for processing. The CMOS-WiI was fabricated in a UMC 0.18 µm RF CMOS process and its total power consumption is 23mW with a voltage-supply of only 1.5 V. The carrier frequency...

Neuron-specific proteotoxicity of mutant ataxin-3 in C. elegans: rescue by the ...

The risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases increases with age. Although many of the molecular pathways regulating proteotoxic stress and longevity are well characterized, their contribution to disease susceptibility remains unclear. In this study, we describe a new Caenorhabditis elegans model of Machado–Joseph disease pathogenesis. Pan-neuronal expression of mutant ATXN3 leads to a polyQ-length dependen...

New dry electrodes based on iridium oxide (IrO) for non-invasive biopotential r...

Dias, N. S.; Carmo, J. P.; Silva, A. F.; Mendes, P. M.; Correia, J. H.

This paper presents a new type of dry electrodes for acquisition of biopotentials and stimulation. These dry electrodes are composed by 16 microtip structures (by forming an array of 4×4 microtips), which were fabricated through bulk micromachining of a 100 -type silicon substrate in a potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution. The fabrication process was trimmed in a way that each microtip presents solid angles of 5...

Interface cérebro-máquina baseada em biotelemetria e eléctrodos secos

Dias, N. S.

A chip-size antenna for wireless EEG

Correia, J. H.; Dias, N. S.; Barbosa, C. A.; Mendes, P. M.

This paper presents the design and characterization of a patch antenna built on lossy substrates compatible with integrated circuits fabrication. Two different substrates were used for antenna implementation: high-resistivity silicon (HRS) and Corning Pyrex #7740 glass. The antenna prototypes were built to operate close to the 5 GHz ISM band where applications like HIPERLAN and IEEE802.11a are standardized. The...

Subject age in P300 BCI

Dias, N. S.; Mendes, P. M.; Correia, J. H.

This paper presents a study about the amplitude, latency and distribution of P300 in twelve healthy volunteers (5 women and 7 men, aged between 19-70, with a mean of 35.5 years) that were submitted to two Novelty Oddball Paradigms. The difference between them is on stimulus modalities, which are visual and auditory. Usually, a P300-based brain computer interface has visual stimuli but we are also interested in ...
