The Pinhal do Souto mine exploited a quartz vein containing uranium minerals, mainly autunite and torbernite. This vein intersects a two-mica granite containing 10 ppm U and uraninite. The mine was exploited underground and produced 93,091 kg U3O8 between 1978 and 1989 and was then closed down. Two dumps were left in the mine area and these are partially covered by natural vegetation. Groundwater and surface wa...

NEW SEISMIC SOURCE ZONE MODEL FOR PORTUGAL AND AZORES FOR USE IN SHARE: METHODO...

Vilanova, S.P.; Oliveira, C.S:; Brum da Silveira, A.; Madeira, J.; Nemser, E.; Fonseca, J.; Arvidsson, R.; Besana-Ostman, G:M:; Bezzeghoud, M.

The development of seismogenic source models is one of the first steps in seismic hazard assessment. In seismic hazard terminology, seismic source zones (SSZ) are polygons (or volumes) that delineate areas with homogeneous characteristics of seismicity. The importance of using knowledge on geology, seismicity and tectonics in the definition of source zones has been recognized for a long time. However, the defin...

In seismic hazard terminology, seismic source zones (SSZ) are polygons (or volumes) that delineate areas with homogeneous characteristics of seismicity. The national inventory of geosites in Portugal

Brilha, J. B.; Alcalá, A.; Almeida, A.; Araújo, A.; Azerêdo, Ana; Azevedo, M. R.; Barriga, Fernando; Silveira, A. Brum; Cabral, J.; Cachão, M.

During the last three years geoscientists of various institutions have developed a project aiming the setup of a geoconservation strategy in Portugal (Brilha, 2009). One of the main goals of the project was the establishment of an inventory of the most important Portuguese geosites, under the scientific point of view. In a near future, national authorities will consider this inventory as a technical support for...

Assinatura tectono-sedimentar do auge da compressão bética em Portugal: a desco...

Cunha, P. P.; Pimentel, N.; Pereira, D. I.

An Upper Miocene important sedimentary break can be accurately recognised in the Portuguese basins and is reflected by a drastic palaeogeographic change in relation to a large-scale tectonic event of probable uppermost Vallesian-Turolian (9,5 Ma; middle Tortonian) age. The characterisation of the sedimentary record of this tectonic event, as well as its relations with interpreted active faults is made for diffe...

Estratigrafia e interpretação paleogeográfica do Cenozóico continental do norte...

Pereira, D. I.; Alves, M. I. C.; Araújo, M. A.; Cunha, P. P.

Palaeogeographic and tectono-sedimentary interpretation of northern Portugal, in which previous studies (geomorphology, lithostratigraphy, mineralogy, sedimentology, palaeontology, etc.) were considered, is here proposed. Cenozoic shows different features according to its morphotectonic setting in the eestern region (Trás-os-Montes) or near to the Atlantic coast (western region, Minho and Douro Litoral areas). ...

Evolução cenozóica da área de Longroiva-Vilariça (NE Portugal)

Cunha, P. P.; Pereira, D. I.

In the Longroiva-Vilariça area, the identification of Cenozoic lithostratigraphic units, the sedimentology and the characterization of its geometric relations with tectonic structures allowed the interpretation of the palaeogeographic main stages: 1) the greenwhitish Vilariça Arkoses (Middle Eocene to Oligocene ?) represent proximal sediments of a very low gradient drainage towards the eastern Spanish Tertiary ...

Litostratigrafia do Terciario da região Miranda do Corvo-Viseu (Bacia do Mondeg...

Cunha, P. P.

The lithostratigraphic units (2 groups, 5 formations and 4 members) of the Tertiary of the Miranda do Corvo-Viseu region (Central Portugal) are here described. For each unit the characterization and description (boundaries, diagnostic properties and atributes) were included. The stratigraphic, lithological, sequential and tectonic data allow correlations with other units of the same Tertiary basin located more ...

Paleoalterações e cimentações nos depósitos continentais terciários de Portugal...

Cunha, P. P.

This paper describes the palaeoweathering, cementation, clay minerals association and other closely related characteristics of central Portugal allostratigraphic Tertiary units (SLD's), that can be used for palaeoclimatic interpretation and palaeoenvironmental reconstruction. Lateral and vertical changes in palaeosols are of value for improving our understanding of the autocyclic and allocyclic controls on sedi...
