Bathymodiolus azoricus is a mussel from vent fields in the south-west of the Azores Triple Junction (Mid-Atlantic Ridge-MAR). Experimental evidence indicates that B. azoricus is a mixotrophic organism, which obtains energy from a dual endosymbiosis and filter-feeding. Yet the relative contribution of symbiosis and filter-feeding to B. azoricus nutrition is still unclear. To address this question, we developed a...

he purpose of this study is to assess, with elite crawl swimmers, the time limit at the minimum velocity corresponding to maximal oxygen consumption (TLim-vVO2max), and to characterize its main determinants. Eight subjects performed an incremental test for vVO2max assessment and, forty-eight hours later, an all-out swim at vVO2max until exhaustion. VO2 was directly measured using a telemetric portable gas analy...

Non-indigenous marine species of the Azores

Cardigos, Frederico; Tempera, Fernando; Ávila, Sérgio P.; Gonçalves, João M.; Colaço, Ana; Santos, Ricardo S.

Copyright (c) Springer-Verlag and AWI 2006. ; Marine benthic species introduced to the Azores are collated from scientific publications, internal reports and own data. Twelve algae and 21 invertebrates are classified as non-indigenous species, 18 as cryptogenic. Two species of algae and two ascidians are regarded as particularly invasive along the shores of this oceanic archipelago.
