The Saros cycle: obtaining eclipse periodicity from Newton's laws
Chalub,Fabio A.C.C.The Saros cycle has been known since antiquity and refers to the periodicity of eclipses. It is the least common multiple of three periods: the synodic, the draconic, and the anomalistic months. We show how to obtain these periods from Newton's laws with a precision greater than 0.02% using only the sidereal month and year as references.
On Huygens' principle for Dirac operators associated to electromagnetic fields
CHALUB,FABIO A.C.C.We study the behavior of massless Dirac particles, i.e., solutions of the Dirac equation with m = 0 in the presence of an electromagnetic field. Our main result (Theorem 1) is that for purely real or imaginary fields any Huygens type (in Hadamard's sense) Dirac operators is equivalent to the free Dirac operator, equivalence given by changes of variables and multiplication (right and left) by nonzero functions.
