Biodegradation of chiral pharmaceuticals by an activated sludge consortium foll...

Ribeiro, Ana R.; Castro, P. M. L.; Afonso, Carlos; Tiritan, Maria

Biodegradation tends to be enantioselective in contrast to abiotic degradation and it is necessary enantioselective analytical methods to quantify the enantiomeric fraction of chiral pharmaceuticals in the environment for correct risk assessment. In this work, we developed HPLC-FD methods to follow the biodegradation of four beta-blockers: alprenolol , propranolol , metoprolol and atenolol and the antidepressan...

Draft genome sequences of two Pseudomonas aeruginosa clinical isolates with dif...

Soares-Castro, P; Marques, D; Demyanchuck, S; Faustino, A; Santos, PM

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a primary cause of opportunistic infections. We have sequenced and annotated the genomes of two P. aeruginosa clinical isolates evidencing different antibiotic susceptibilities. Registered differences in the composition of their accessory genomes may provide clues on P. aeruginosa strategies to thrive in different environments like infection loci.

Moreira, Helena; Marques, Ana P. G. C.; Rangel, António O. S. S; Castro, P.M.L.

Phytoremediation is a promising alternative to conventional soil clean-up methods; however, up to date, there is still not enough information on plant species suitable for application in this field of science. Therefore, plant screening on contaminated sites can lead to the identification of further species of interest. In the present study, pedological and botanical characteristics of an industrialised area kn...

Extraction of valuable compounds from Ginja Cherry by-products: effect of the s...

Demiray, S.; Piccirillo, C.; Rodrigues, C. L.; Pintado, M. E.; Castro, P. M. L.

Purpose To study the composition of extracts of Ginja cherries stems and leaves obtained after extraction using different solvents and to evaluate their antioxidant activities. Stems and leaves are by-products of the Ginjinha cherry liquor production; extracting valuable compounds with the most appropriate solvent would valorise these wastes. Method The extraction was performed using different solvents (acetone...
