Numerical and experimental investigations of three-dimensional container fillin...

Tomé, M. F.; Castelo, A.; Nóbrega, J. M.; Carneiro, O. S.; Paulo, G. S.; Pereira, F. T.

This work employs numerical and experimental approaches to investigate three-dimensional container filling with Newtonian viscous fluids. For this purpose, a computer code developed for simulating three-dimensional free surface flows has been used. The CFD Freeflow3D code was specifically designed to deal with unsteady three-dimensional flows possessing multiple moving free surfaces. An experimental apparatus t...

Design of complex profile extrusion dies through numerical modeling

Gonçalves, N. D.; Carneiro, O. S.; Nóbrega, J. M.

The achievement of a balanced flow is one of the major tasks encompassed in the design of profile extrusion dies [1]. For this purpose numerical modeling codes may be a very useful aid. The research team involved in this work has been working during the last decade on the development of numerical tools to aid the conception of extrusion dies [1,2]. The design code developed so far carries out the automatic sear...

Prototype and methodology for the characterization of the polymer-calibrator in...

Carneiro, O. S.; Nóbrega, J. M.; Mota, Armando R.; Silva, Carolina

The extrusion of technical thermoplastics profiles generally uses a dry calibration/cooling system, composed by one or several calibrators in series. One of the major difficulties to be faced when modelling this important stage is an adequate prescription of the heat transfer coefficient, hinterface, between the plastic profile surface and the cooling medium, which must include the effect of the interface conta...

Modelling the extrusion cooling/calibration stage for complex thermoplastic pro...

Ribau, A. M.; Nóbrega, J. M.; Carneiro, O. S.

The main objective of this work is to implement a 3D non-isothermal multi-domain numerical code, based on finite volume method, able to deal with unstructured meshes that can be used to aid the design of calibration/cooling systems. At the final stage the code should incorporate the major phenomena that take place during profile cooling, including the prediction of the developed thermal residual stresses.

Ribau, A. M.; Silva, Carolina; Mota, Armando R.; Nóbrega, J. M.; Carneiro, O. S.

The main objective of this work is to design a prototype system that will enable the determination of realistic values for h at the interface polymer-calibrator in real and varied extrusion conditions. The data obtained will allow improving the accuracy of the numerical codes that are being developed by the research team, through the implementation of realistic models for h.

Flow balancing in complex geometry profiles extrusion dies

Gonçalves, N. D.; Carneiro, O. S.; Nóbrega, J. M.

One of the most complex tasks involved in the design of profile extrusion dies, is to obtain a balanced flow, which can be simplified through the employment of numerical modelling tools [1]. This work is part of a broader project that has been developed during the last years [1,2], and comprises the development of adequate numerical modelling codes to aid the design of extrusion dies. The initial version of the...

Numerical modelling code based on the finite volume method in unstructured grids

Gonçalves, N. D.; Carneiro, O. S.; Nóbrega, J. M.

In this work, the implementation employed in the new modeling code is described. It is based on the FVM with on a SIMPLE type scheme suitable for unstructured meshes.

On the performance of profile extrusion dies

Pereira, S. P.; Carneiro, O. S.; Nóbrega, J. M.

This work presents a study performed with an in-house 3D numerical modelling code, used to evaluate the sensitivity of extrusion dies, optimized with alternative strategies, to process parameters, such as machining inaccuracies, melt rheology and processing conditions.
