Contaminated water, stream sediments and soils close to the abandoned Pinhal do...

Neiva, A. M. R.; Carvalho, P. C. S.; Antunes, I. M. H. R.; Silva, M. M. V. G.; Santos, A. C. T.; Pinto, M. M. S. Cabral; Cunha, P. P.

The Pinhal do Souto mine exploited a quartz vein containing uranium minerals, mainly autunite and torbernite. This vein intersects a two-mica granite containing 10 ppm U and uraninite. The mine was exploited underground and produced 93,091 kg U3O8 between 1978 and 1989 and was then closed down. Two dumps were left in the mine area and these are partially covered by natural vegetation. Groundwater and surface wa...

Thyroid dysfunction and amiodarone

Lima, J; Carvalho, P; Molina, MA; Rebelo, M; Dias, P; Vieira, JD; Nascimento-Costa, JM

Although most patients remain clinically euthyroid, some develop amiodarone-induced hyperthyroidism (HPEAI) or hypothyroidism (HPOAI). The authors present a retrospective analysis of ten patients with amiodarone-induced thyroid dysfunction. Six patients were female and mean amiodarone intake was 17.7 months. HPOIA was more common (six patients). From all the patients with HPEAI, two had type 2, one had type 1, ...

Multiscale Copper-uDiamond Nanostructured Composites

Nunes, D.; Livramento, Vanessa; Fernandes, H.; Silva, C.; Shohoji, Nobumitsu; Correia, J. Brito; Carvalho, P. A.

Nanostructured copper-diamond composites can be tailored for thermal management applications at high temperature. A novel approach based on multiscale diamond dispersions is proposed for the production of this type of materials: a Cu-nDiamond composite produced by high-energy milling is used as a nanostructured matrix for further dispersion of micrometer sized diamond. The former offers strength and microstruct...

Elemental interdiffusion in W-Ta composites developed for fusion applications

Mateus, R.; Dias, M.; Livramento, Vanessa; Nunes, D.; Carvalho, P. A.; Hanada, K.; Correia, J. Brito

Tungsten (W) was select for an extensive use in nuclear fusion devices due to its low neutron activation, high melting point and sputtering threshold as well as low hydrogen inventory. Nevertheless, W is brittle at low and moderate temperatures, which results in abnormal thermal stress, component fracture and extra erosion under reactor operation due to inherent thermal cycling events. An attractive way to solv...

Blistering of W–Ta composites at different irradiation energies

Mateus, R.; Dias, M.; Lopes, J.; Rocha, J.; Catarino, N.; Duarte, P.; Gomes, R. B.; Silva, C.; Fernandes, H.; Livramento, Vanessa; Carvalho, P. A.

Pure tungsten and tantalum plates and tungsten–tantalum composites produced via mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering were bombarded with He+ and D+ energetic ion beams and deuterium plasmas. The aim of this experiment is to study the effects caused by individual helium and deuterium exposures and to evidence that the modifications induced in the composites at different irradiation energies could be fo...

Synergistic helium and deuterium blistering in tungsten–tantalum composites

Dias, M.; Mateus, R.; Catarino, N.; Franco, N.; Nunes, D.; Correia, J. Brito; Carvalho, P. A.; Hanada, K.; Sârbu, C.; Alves, E.

Tungsten–tantalum composites with 10 and 20 at.% Ta were prepared by ball milling W powder with Ta fibers and by consolidating the milled materials with spark plasma sintering. The composites were implanted at room temperature with He+ (30 keV with a fluence 5 1021 at/m2) and/or D+ (15 keV with a fluence 5 x 1021 at/m2) ion beams. The materials were studied by scanning and high-resolution transmission electron ...

Effects of helium and deuterium irradiation on SPS sintered W–Ta composites at ...

Mateus, R.; Dias, M.; Lopes, J.; Rocha, J.; Catarino, N.; Franco, N.; Livramento, Vanessa; Carvalho, P. A.; Correia, J. Brito; Hanada, K.; Alves, E.

Energetic He+ and D+ ions were implanted into different W–Ta composites in order to investigate their stability under helium and deuterium irradiation. The results were compared with morphological and chemical modifications arising from exposure of pure W and Ta. Special attention was given to tantalum hydride (Ta2H)formation due to its implications for tritium inventory. Three W–Ta composites with 10 and 20 at...

Tungsten–nanodiamond composite powders produced by ball milling

Nunes, D.; Livramento, Vanessa; Mardolcar, U. V.; Correia, J. Brito; Carvalho, P. A.

The major challenge in producing tungsten–nanodiamond composites by ball milling lies in successfully dispersing carbon nanoparticles in the metallic matrix while keeping carbide formation at a minimum. Processing windows for carbide minimization have been established through systematic variation of the nanodiamond fraction, milling energy and milling time. Materials characterization has been carried out by X-r...

Nickel–carbon nanocomposites: Synthesis, structural changes and strengthening m...

Nunes, D.; Vilarigues, M.; Correia, J. Brito; Carvalho, P. A.

The present work investigates Ni–nanodiamond and Ni–graphite composites produced by mechanical synthesis and subsequent heat treatments. Processing of nickel–carbon nanocomposites by this powder metallurgy route poses specific challenges, as carbon phases are prone to carbide conversion and amorphization. The processing window for carbide prevention has been established through X-ray diffraction by a systematic...
