OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the positive predictive value (PPV) of group B Streptococcus (GBS) cultures at 35-37 weeks of gestation relative to GBS colonization status at delivery. METHODS: Rectovaginal swabs from 221 women at labor in four Lisbon hospitals were collected for GBS screening according to the CDC guidelines. RESULTS: The PPV was 24.4%. IAP was administered to 100% of prenatally GBS positive women. Ther...

Confined Placental Mosaicism in Chorionic Vilus Sampling - Case Report

Olival, V; Caetano, P; Bernardo, A; Correia, H; Caetano, M; Mira, R

Objectives: Chorionic Vilus Sampling (CVS) has several advantages over amniocentesis: it may be performed at an earlier gestational age, the results are quicker to obtain and there’s a lower miscarriage risk – 1%. However, the higher prevalence of discrepant fetal and vilus sampling material’s karyotype findings is a disadvantage of this technique – 0.5%. This is caused, amongst other causes, by placental mosai...

The national inventory of geosites in Portugal

Brilha, J. B.; Alcalá, A.; Almeida, A.; Araújo, A.; Azerêdo, Ana; Azevedo, M. R.; Barriga, Fernando; Silveira, A. Brum; Cabral, J.; Cachão, M.

During the last three years geoscientists of various institutions have developed a project aiming the setup of a geoconservation strategy in Portugal (Brilha, 2009). One of the main goals of the project was the establishment of an inventory of the most important Portuguese geosites, under the scientific point of view. In a near future, national authorities will consider this inventory as a technical support for...

Orbital forcing of stratal patterns in an inner platform carbonate sucession: a...

Lézin, C.; Bonnet, L.; Rey, J.; Caetano, P. S.; Gonçalves, P.; Rocha, F.; Rocha, R. B.

With an example taken from a late-Hauterivian series of the Lusitanian Basin (Portugal), we will demonstrate the sedimentary record of orbital pattern variations and, consequently, climate variations in an inner platform environment with patterns and isolation changes, allows us to establish 4 major orders of periodicity related to orbital components:- The large cycles ob bed thickness variation, constituted by...

Involvement of the beta-cinnamomin elicitin in infection and colonisation of co...

Cravador, A.; Horta, M.; Caetano, P.; Medeira, C.; Maia, I.

The virulence of two wild type (PA45 and PA37) and two genetically modified (13C: hygromycin resistant; FATSS: hygromycin resistant and β-cin knock-down) Phytophthora cinnamomi strains towards cork oak (Quercus suber) was assessed via a quantitative evaluation of disease symptoms arising from a soil infestation assay, and by a istological analysis of root colonization. Comparison of virulence, as expressed by ...

Caracterização mineralógica da sequência sedimentar Ha7 do Cretácico Inferior d...

Gonçalves, P.; Caetano, P. S.; Rocha, F.; Lézin, C.; Rey, J.

Mineralogical assemblages, specially clay mineral assemblages, have been widely used in multidisciplinary stratigraphical studies. This paper presents the results obtained in the study of a Lower Cretaceous depositional sequence from the Lusitanian Basin (Portugal). The Upper Hauterivian – Lower Barremian section at Guincho Fort pertains mostly to the Ha7 3rd order depositional sequence defined by J. REY & al. ...

Os topónimos algarvios na Paleontologia portuguesa

Rocha, R. B.; Kullberg, J. C.; Caetano, P. S.

Since the XIX century, Portuguese and foreign geologists have defined 47 new invertebrate taxa (foraminifera, ostracods, coelenterates, brachiopods, gastropods, ammonoids, echinoids), 2 new fossil plant taxa (charophyte and pteridophyte) and 1 ichnofossil, using toponymy from the Algarve; these taxa refer to 1 genera, 47 species and 2 varieties. Besides the Algarve toponym, the most used as specific name, twent...

Envolvimento de Phytophthora cinnamomi no declínio de Quercus suber e Q. rotund...

Caetano, P.

This article describes the preparation and characterization of the cellulose/ hydrated zirconium oxide composites prepared by conventional precipitation (PC) and homogeneous solution precipitation (PSH) methods. The composite obtained by the PC method was prepared by using an ammonia solution as the precipitating agent, while the composite obtained by the PSH method was prepared by using urea as the precipitati...
