57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction were used to study the structural changes induced by ball milling a coarse-grained Fe48.1V51.9 at% sigma phase in a vibratory mill in argon with a frequent gas renewal. The solubility of tin is significantly extended by mechanical alloying in near equiatomic Fe-Cr alloys. The influences of Sn concentration and of grain size on the kinetics of formation of the sigma-phase have been studied using different techniques.
