Performance of Argon-Xenon Mixtures in a Gas Proportional Scintillation Counter...

Carmo, S. J. C. do; Borges, F. I. G. M.; Conde, C. A. N.

The performance of a gas proportional scintillation counter filled with either pure Xe or Ar-Xe mixtures is described for the 0.1-10 keV X-ray energy range. It is shown that the spectra tail distortion exhibited by Xe filled gaseous detectors for soft X-rays below 2 keV is reduced if Ar-Xe mixtures are used. The peak-to-valley ratio increases by a factor of about 2 or 3 as the Xe concentration is reduced from 1...

A gas proportional-scintillation counter for x-ray spectrometry in the 0.1-3 ke...

Results for the energy resolution of a uniform-field gas proportional-scintillation counter are presented for the range 0.1-3 keV. A comparison with results from the literature shows that the detector is most suitable for this energy range. Examples of x-ray fluorescence pulse-height distributions from geological and industrial samples are presented. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. ; http://dx.doi.o...

The operation of a xenon filled gas proportional scintillation counter under low charge multiplication gains is discussed. It is shown that the best energy resolution for X-rays is obtained for a reduced electric field, E/p, of about 8 V cm-1 Torr-1, leading to a charge gain (for inter-grid distance of 5 mm) of about 1.05, as calculated by a Monte Carlo simulation method. A discussion is presented concerning th...

A method for the measurement of the absolute value of w for X-rays in noble gas...

Borges, F. I. G. M.; Conde, C. A. N.

A method is described that allows the measurement of the absolute value of the average energy to produce an ion pair, w, in noble gases for soft X-rays and its energy dependence. It uses a specially designed gas proportional scintillation counter working under electric fields below the ionization threshold. The spectrum of the radiation absorbed, and so the number of photons detected at each energy for a period...
