Vitamin A and Lung Development

Pinto, Maria de Lurdes; Rodrigues, Paula; Honório, Ana; Gonçalves, Carlos; Bairos, Vasco

Lung development is a methodical and coordinated process that culminates in the creation of an organ that contains airways, alveoli, blood vessels, multiple innate and acquired host defense systems, and processes to weaken the harmful effects of oxygen in the environment. By regulating cellular differentiation and branching morphogenesis, vitamin A plays an essential role during lung development. Retinoic acid ...

Vitamin A and the retinoids play a unique role in mammalian embryonic and foetal development and are essential for both cellular differentiation and the establishment of normal morphogenesis. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a known potent mitogenic factor that plays a key role in lung development and function maintenance. In order to contribute to a better knowledge of the modulating effects of vit...

We have studied the fusion activity of Sendai virus, a lipid-enveloped paramyxovirus, towards a line of adherent cells designated PC-12. Fusion was monitored by the dequenching of octadecylrhodamine, a fluorescent non-exchangeable probe. The results were analysed with a mass action kinetic model which could explain and predict the kinetics of virus2013cell fusion. When the temperature was lowered from 37°C to 2...
