COGNITIVE MAPS IN PROBLEM BASED LEARNING EVALUATION

Casale, Adriana; Universidade de São Paulo, Brasil; P. Kuri, Nídia; Universidade de São Paulo, Brasil

The purpose of this study is to investigate the learning performance of the Civil Engineering students using the Problem Based Learning (PBL) method as part of instructional innovations that took place in an Engineering Transportation course. Cardiac resynchronization therapy in the elderly: A realistic option for an inc...

António, N; Elvas, L; Gonçalves, L; Providência, LA

Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) has become a mainstay of heart failure treatment. Since heart failure is a disease primarily affecting older patients it is important to evaluate the performance of CRT in this population. Elderly has been suggested as a subgroup less likely to benefit from CRT. This is an important issue that should be clarified, because most patients with heart failure are old. The pres...

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Prognosis and in-hospital management of patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and a history of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery are still debated. The objective of this study was to characterize ACS patients with a CABG and to compare their in-hospital and postdischarge outcomes with those of patients without a CABG. METHODS: This ongoing prospective observational s...

High blood pressure in the pediatric age group

Andrade, H; António, N; Rodrigues, D; Marinho da Silva, A; Pego, M; Providência, LA

The definition of hypertension (HT) in the pediatric age group is based on the normal distribution of blood pressure (BP) in healthy children. Normal BP is defined as being below the 90th percentile for gender, age and height, and hypertension as equal to or higher than the 95th percentile on at least three separate occasions. If the values are above the 90th percentile but below the 95th percentile, the child ...

Diabetes mellitus does not affect one-year outcome after heart transplantation

António, N; Prieto, D; Providência, LA; Antunes, MJ

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Heart transplantation remains the gold standard treatment for selected patients with end-stage heart failure. However, transplantation in diabetic patients remains controversial. The hyperglycemic effect of immunosuppressant therapy further complicates posttransplantation management of diabetes and, although this is still unproven, could be responsible for a higher incidence of post-transpl...

António, N; Fernandes, R; Rodriguez-Losada, N; Jiménez-Navarro, MF; Paiva, A; Galván, ET; Gonçalves, L; Fontes-Ribeiro, C; Providência, LA

The role of vascular endothelium in cardiovascular disorders is well recognized. Mature endothelial cells contribute to the repair of endothelial injury, but they only have a limited capacity to do so. This has led to growing interest and further investigation into circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) and their role in vascular healing, repair, and postnatal neovascularization. The current perception...

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) in elderly patients (> or =65 years) with younger patients and to assess the impact of comorbidities in CRT remodeling response. METHODS: This is a prospective study of 87 consecutive patients scheduled for CRT who underwent clinical and echocardiographic evaluation before and 6 months after CRT. A reductio...
