Mitochondrial Cumulative Damage Induced by Mitoxantrone: Late Onset Cardiac Ene...

Rossato, Luciana Grazziotin; Costa, Vera Marisa; Dallegrave, Eliane; Arbo, Marcelo; Silva, Renata; Ferreira, Rita; Amado, Francisco

Mitoxantrone (MTX) is a chemotherapeutic agent, which presents late irreversible cardiotoxicity. This work aims to highlight the mechanisms involved in the MTX-induced cardiotoxicity, namely the effects toward mitochondria using in vivo and in vitro studies. Male Wistar rats were treated with 3 cycles of 2.5 mg/kg MTX at day 0, 10, and 20. One treated group was euthanized on day 22 (MTX22) to evaluate the early...

Response of high-risk of recurrence/progression bladder tumours expressing sial...

High risk of recurrence/progression bladder tumours is treated with Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) immunotherapy after complete resection of the tumour. Approximately 75% of these tumours express the uncommon carbohydrate antigen sialyl-Tn (Tn), a surrogate biomarker of tumour aggressiveness. Such changes in the glycosylation of cell-surface proteins influence tumour microenvironment and immune responses that m...

Little is known on the expression of the tumour-associated carbohydrate antigen sialyl-Tn (STn), in bladder cancer. We report here that 75% of the high-grade bladder tumours, presenting elevated proliferation rates and high risk of recurrence/progression expressed STn. However, it was mainly found in non-proliferative areas of the tumour, namely in cells invading the basal and muscle layers. STn was also found ...

Regulation of histone H2A.Z expression is mediated by sirtuin 1 in prostate cancer

Baptista, Tiago; Graça, Inês; Sousa, Elsa J.; Oliveira, Ana Isabel; Costa, Natália R.; Costa-Pinheiro, Pedro; Amado, Francisco; Henrique, Rui

Histone variants seem to play a major role in gene expression regulation. In prostate cancer, H2A.Z and its acetylated form are implicated in oncogenes’ upregulation. SIRT1, which may act either as tumor suppressor or oncogene, reduces H2A.Z levels in cardiomyocytes, via proteasome-mediated degradation, and this mechanism might be impaired in prostate cancer cells due to sirtuin 1 downregulation. Thus, we aimed...

Protein Electrophoresis in Saliva Study

Lamy, Elsa; Costa, Ana R; Antunes, Celia M; Vitorino, Rui; Amado, Francisco

The following sections will give an overview about the use of electrophoresis in saliva studies. Methodological issues and the major advantages and limitations for the use of this technique in human and animal saliva studies will be presented. We will finish the chapter by presenting alternatives to electrophoresis for the study of salivary proteome.

A contabilidade brasileira no século XIX - Leis, Ensino e Literatura
