Rodrigues, Ana Rita O.; Almeida, B. G.; Gomes, I. Tarroso; Araújo, J. P.; Castanheira, Elisabete M. S.; Coutinho, Paulo J. G.

Liposomes entrapping nickel-based magnetic nanoparticles (magnetoliposomes) were prepared and characterized.

Magnetoliposomes based on magnetite nanoparticles

Castanheira, Elisabete M. S.; Mendes, Pedro M. F.; Coutinho, Paulo J. G.; Almeida, B. G.; Gomes, I.Tarroso; Araújo, J. P.

In this work, magnetic nanoparticles of magnetite were prepared by soft chemical methods, using different surfactants as templating media. These nanoparticles were either covered with a lipid bilayer, forming dry magnetoliposomes, or entrapped in liposomes - aqueous magnetoliposomes.

Magnetoliposomes based on nickel/silica core/shell nanoparticles

Rodrigues, Ana Rita O.; Castanheira, Elisabete M. S.; Coutinho, Paulo J. G.; Almeida, B. G.; Gomes, I.Tarroso; Araújo, J. P.

In this work, magnetic nanoparticles of nickel core with silica shell were prepared by soft chemical methods, using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and different surfactants as templating media. These nanoparticles were either covered with a lipid bilayer or entrapped in liposomes.

Pr 0.5 Ca 0.5 MnO 3 thin films deposited on LiNbO 3 substrates

Gomes, I. Tarroso; Almeida, B. G.; Araújo, J. P.

Thin films of Pr 0.5 Ca 0.5 MnO 3 have been deposited on z-cut LiNbO 3 by pulsed laser ablation. The X-ray diffraction measurements showed that the films have grown highly oriented on LiNbO 3 , with a pseudocubic (111) preferred growth direction. The thicknesses of the films, measured by low angle X-ray reflectivity, are between 13 and 140 nm. Their electrical resistivity present a...

Surface characterization of Ti-Si-C-ON coatings for orthopedic devices : XPS an...

Oliveira, C.; Escobar Galindo, R.; Palacio, C.; Calderon Velasquez, S.; Almeida, B. G.; Henriques, Mariana; Espinosa, A.; Carvalho, S.

Ti–Si–C–ON films were deposited by DC reactive magnetron sputtering and their chemical properties, biofilm formation and toxicity were characterized. Based on the films composition three different growth regimes were identified on the films; (I) N/Ti = 2.11 (high atomic ratio) and low oxygen content; (II) 0.77 ≤ N/Ti ≤ 1.86 (intermediate atomic ratio) and (III) N/Ti ≤ 0.12 (low ratio) and high oxygen content. T...

Simple way to make Anatase TiO2 films on FTO glass for promising solar cells

Raghavender, A. T.; Samantilleke, A. P.; Sá, Pedro; Almeida, B. G.; Vasilevskiy, Mikhail; Nguyen Hoa Hong

TiO2 is a wide bandgap semiconductor material used as the photo anode in dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC). The fabrication of TiO2 on conductive glass substrates plays an important role in the solar cell efficiency, since the thickness of the TiO2 coating affects the transmission, photoconductive properties and the efficiency of solar cells. The uncorrected transmission in our fabricated films is as high as 80...

High nonlinear optical anisotropy of urea nanofibers

Isakov, D. V.; Gomes, E. de Matos; Belsley, M.; Almeida, B. G.; Martins, Albino; Neves, N. M.; Reis, R. L.

Nanofibers consisting of the optically nonlinear organic molecule urea embedded in both poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) polymers were produced by the electrospinning technique. The second-harmonic generation produced by aligned fiber mats of these materials displays a strong dependence on the polarization of the incident light. In PVA-urea nanofibers the effectiveness in generating of t...

Influence of the surface morphology and microstructure on the biological proper...

Oliveira, Cristina; Escobar Galindo, R.; Palacio, C.; Vázquez, L.; Espinosa, A.; Almeida, B. G.; Henriques, Mariana; Oliveira, Rosário; Carvalho, S.

Detailed structural, microstructural, biofilm formation and cytotoxicity studies were performed on Ti-Si-C-ON hard coatings prepared by dc reactive magnetron sputtering, in order to evaluate the relation among these properties. Compositional analysis showed the existence of two distinct regimens; regime I: high C/Si atomic ratio (C/Si ≥1,42) and intermediate N/Ti atomic ratio; regime II: low C/Si atomic ratio (...

Synthesis of polymer-based triglycine sulfate nanofibres by electrospinning

Isakov, D. V.; Martins, Albino; Gomes, E. de Matos; Bdikin, Igor; Guimarães, Ana; Dekola, Tatjana; Almeida, B. G.; Neves, N. M.; Reis, R. L.

In this work we present the synthesis and characterization of polyethylene oxide (PEO) based triglycine sulfate (NH2(CH2OOH)3H2S04, TGS) nanofibres obtained by electrospinning. The fibres, with typical diameters of about 190–750 nm and above several hundred micrometres in length, present the nanocrystals of TGS embedded in a polymer matrix. The obtained nanofibres were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy and th...

XRD and FTIR analysis of Ti–Si–C–ON coatings for biomedical applications

Oliveira, Cristina; Gonçalves, L. M.; Almeida, B. G.; Tavares, C. J.; Carvalho, S.; Vaz, F.; Escobar Galindo, R.; Henriques, Mariana; Susano, M.

Ti–Si–C–ON films were deposited by DC reactive magnetron sputtering using different partial pressure ratio of oxygen (pO2) and nitrogen (pN2). Compositional analysis revealed the existence of three different growth zones for the films; (I) N/Ti = 2.1 (high atomic ratio) and low oxygen content; (II) 0.76 < N/Ti < 2.1 (intermediate atomic ratio) and (III) N/Ti ≤ 0.12 (low ratio) and high oxygen content. For high ...
