Improving the communication reliability of body sensor networks based on the IE...

Gomes, Diogo; Afonso, José A.

Body sensor networks (BSNs) enable continuous monitoring of patients anywhere, with minimum constraints to daily life activities. Although the IEEE 802.15.4 and ZigBee® (ZigBee Alliance, San Ramon, CA) standards were mainly developed for use in wireless sensors network (WSN) applications, they are also widely used in BSN applications because of device characteristics such as low power, low cost, and small form ...

Experimental performance comparison of indoor positioning algorithms based on r...

Silva, Hélder D.; Afonso, José A.; Rocha, Luís A.

Publicado em "Proceedings of the World Congress on Engineering 2014, vol. 1. ISBN 978-988-19252-7-5" ; The work presented here compares the performance of indoor positioning systems suitable for low power wireless sensor networks. Map matching, approximate positioning (weighted centroid) and exact positioning algorithms (least squares) were tested and compared in a small predefined indoor environment. We found...

Remote patient monitoring based on ZigBee : lessons from a real-world deployment

Fernández-López, Helena; Afonso, José A.; Correia, J. H.; Simões, R.

This work presents detailed experimental performance results, from tests executed in the hospital environment, for HM4All, a remote vital signs monitoring system based on a ZigBee body sensor network (BSN). Tests involved the use of six electrocardiogram (ECG) sensors operating in two different modes: the ECG mode involved the transmission of ECG waveform data and heart rate (HR) values to the ZigBee coordinato...

A telerehabilitation system based on wireless motion capture sensors

Macedo, Pedro; Afonso, José A.; Rocha, Luís A.; Simões, Ricardo

The constant growth of the elderly population in the world creates new challenges and opportunities in health care systems. New technological solutions have to be found in order to meet the needs and demands of our aging society. The welfare and quality of life of the elderly population must be a priority. Continuous physical activity will play an important role, due to the increase of the retirement age. Howev...

Performance evaluation of ZigBee protocol for high data rate body sensor networks

Gomes, Diogo; Gonçalves, Carlos; Afonso, José A.

Publicado em "Proceedings of the World Congress on Engineering 2013", Vol. 2, ISBN 978-988-19252-8-2 ; This paper presents an experimental performance evaluation of ZigBee networks in the context of data-intensive body sensor networks (BSNs). IEEE 802.15.4/ZigBee devices were mainly developed for use in wireless sensors network (WSN) applications; however, due to characteristics such as low power and small for...

Towards the design of efficient nonbeacon-enabled ZigBee networks

Fernández-López, Helena; Afonso, José A.; Correia, J.H.; Simões, Ricardo

This paper presents experimental results of the communication performance evaluation of a prototype ZigBee-based patient monitoring system commissioned in an in-patient floor of a Portuguese hospital (HPG – Hospital Privado de Guimar~aes). Besides, it revisits relevant problems that affect the performance of nonbeacon-enabled ZigBee networks. Initially, the presence of hidden-nodes and the impact of sensor node...

The need for standardized tests to evaluate the reliability of data transport i...

Fernández-López, Helena; Afonso, José A.; Correia, J.H.; Simões, Ricardo

Wireless medical systems are comprised of four stages, namely the medical device, the data transport, the data collection and the data evaluation stages. Whereas the performance of the first stage is highly regulated, the others are not. This paper concentrates on the data transport stage and argues that it is necessary to establish standardized tests to be used by medical device manufacturers to provide compar...

ZigBee-based remote patient monitoring

Fernández-López, Helena; Afonso, José A.; Correia, J. H.; Simões, Ricardo

This paper describes a developed continuous patient monitoring system based on the ZigBee protocol. The system was tested in the hospital environment using six sensor devices in two different modes. For electrocardiogram transmission and in the absence of hidden-nodes, the system achieved a mean delivery ratio of 100% and 98.56%, respectively for star and 2-hop tree network topologies. When sensor devices were ...
