Description
In Algarve, in June and October 1999 in Sílves, Faro and Tavira municipalities (greenhouses/municipality: 15 – June; 9 - October) leaves/leaflets infested with whitefly (4th instar nymphs) were collected during 15 minutes from melon, sweet pepper, cucumber and tomato crops. In the Oeste region, leaves/leaflets infested with whitefly were collected preferentially from tomato crop, in 85 greenhouses of Moita/Montijo, Sintra, Mafra, Torres Vedras and Bombarral/Óbidos municipalities, from July to December 1999. In the laboratory, the vegetable material was put in covered boxes of expanded polystyrene, wrapped in tin foil with a glass vial inserted in the lateral wall. The emerged adults (whitefly, parasitoids) were kept in 70% ethanol and identified through bibliography and comparison with specimens already identified by NHM-CABI. It was not detected parasitism in Moita/Montijo, Mafra and Óbidos. In Torres Vedras, Sintra and Faro, the dominant species was Encarsia pergandiella (Howard). In Algarve it was found Eretmocerus mundus Mercet, dominant in Sílves and Tavira, as well as Encarsia lutea (Masi), Encarsia sophia (Girault), Encarsia. tricolor Föerster e Amitus fuscipennis MacGown. Encarsia formosa Gahan was not detected in any region, whereas Eretmocerus sp. was not detected in Oeste.
