Doutoramento em Arquitectura Há uma história política, social e religiosa da Civilização. Há uma história da cultura, da arte e mesmo da arquitectura. Todavia, esta dirige-se exclusivamente à arquitectura erudita, já que até ao século XIX, a arquitectura doméstica só encontra assento na etnologia, na etologia e na sociologia. E a propósito da evolução do espaço doméstico, que se ensaia um conjunto de reflexões em torno da casa (urbana) que, consistindo um campo recente para a actividade do arquitecto, reflectiu, desde sempre, a mentalidade e a tradição de cada época. A grande questão para a arquitectura habitacional do futuro, poderá ser a necessidade de gerar um código distinto do da arquitectura institucional e sumptuária, compatibilizando os anseios de uma generalizada liberdade individual, com os constrangimentos que o colectivo não deixará de continuar a impor. A arquitectura vernácula, cujo sistema de enquadramento e restrições se inserem num outro ambito, não é capaz de fornecer os padrões da futura habitação; mas as normas clássicas da arquitectura parecem-nos, contudo, igualmente inapropriadas. O homem ocidental está hoje confrontado com uma situação em que fenómenos de sinal contrário actuam de forma nem sempre harmónica. Tem por um lado a herança dos usos e costumes que fundam a sua tradição, por outro, uma vertiginosa evolução tecnológica. Resta ao arquitecto assegurar um mínimo de operacionalidade, assente no conhecimento profundo da nossa cultura, no respeito escrupuloso da vontade e necessidades dos futuros utilizadores dos seus edifícios e, por último, uma grande percepção da evolução dos sistemas produtivos e das relações sócio-familiares. THE DOMESTIC INTERIOR. REFLECTION ON MENTALITIES AND (LIVING) SPACES There is a political, social and religious history of Civilization. There is also a history of culture, of art and even of architecture. However, the latest is exclusively related to erudite architecture, since up to the nineteenth century the domestic architecture would only find its place in ethnology, ethnology and sociology. It is based on the evolution of the domestic space that some considerations on housing (urban) are made on this essay. Being this, no doubt, a recent area of study for the architect, the house has always given a faithful representation of mentality and tradition in each different era. The vital issue for future dwelling might be the need of producing a specific code, that is, different from the one of institutional and sumptuary architecture, in which the widespread desire for individual freedom together with the restrictions that the "collective" will not cease imposing are conciliated. The vernacular architecture, whose framing and restrictions system is enclosed in another sphere of action, is not able to provide the standards for future dweeling; yet, the classic patterns of architecture seem to be equally inappropriate. The occidental man nowadays faces a situation in which phenomena with opposite signs operate sometimes in a non consistent mode: on one hand, there is the legacy from past habits and usages which, in fact, are the foundations of his tradition; on the other hand, there is the vertiginous evolution of technology. It remains for the architect the task of assuring a minimal operativity based on a profound knowledge of our culture, on a rigorous respect for the will and needs of future users of his buildings and, last but not the least, on a thorough perception of the evolution of productive systems and also of sociofamiliar relationship.
