A dissertação consiste no estudo das séries de Lagrange-Bürmann e na
generalização da série de Bürmann, presentes na Memória “Sobre o
desenvolvimento das funcções em série”, do Matemático Francisco Gomes
Teixeira, nos seus aspectos histórico e matemático.
Inicia-se o trabalho com uma breve apresentação da estrutura da Memória,
dando especial ênfase ao conteúdo matemático desenvolvido em cada um dos
capítulos e aos autores neles referenciados.
A nível matemático apresenta-se uma complementação ao estudo realizado
por Gomes Teixeira na dedução da série de Bürmann, ao modo como esta
compreende a série de Taylor e a de Lagrange e aplicações da série de
Bürmann. Em seguida, estuda-se um novo desenvolvimento em série, que
constitui o conteúdo do Teorema de Teixeira, e como este compreende a série
de Bürmann, a de Taylor, a de Lagrange e a de Laurent.
A nível histórico analisa-se a simbologia e a nomenclatura utilizada por Gomes
Teixeira e revela-se o seu contributo na dinamização do clima matemático
português.
ABSTRACT: This thesis consists of study of the Lagrange-Bürmann series and of the
generalization of the Bürmann series found in the article "Sobre o
desenvolvimento das funcções em série", written by the mathematician
Francisco Gomes Teixeira. The thesis focusses particularly on its historical and
mathematical aspects.
The work starts with a brief presentation of the structure of the article, giving
special emphasis both to the mathematical contents developed in each of the
chapters and to the authors mentioned.
On the mathematical level, an enhancement is presented to the study made by
Gomes Teixeira on the deduction of the Bürmann series, on the way it
comprehends Taylor and Lagrange series and also on the applications of the
Bürmann series. Then, a new series development which constitutes the
contents of Teixeira's Theorem is studied as well as the way it incorporates
Bürmann, Taylor, Lagrange and Laurent series.
On a historical level, the symbolism and terminology used by Gomes Teixeira is
analyzed and their contribution to the dynamization of the mathematical culture
