Esta dissertação tem como principal objectivo a análise da obra do matemático
português Francisco Gomes Teixeira, em especial no que diz respeito à área
de desenvolvimento de funções em série de potências.
Começámos por tentar compreender a importância desta matéria à época de
Teixeira, nomeadamente nos jornais por ele publicados: Jornal de Sciencias e
nos Annaes, e como era abordada pela comunidade internacional, e depois
passámos à dissecação da matemática usada por Gomes Teixeira. São para
isso analisados dois artigos: Sur le développement des fonction en série
ordonnée suivant les puissances du sinus et du cosinus de la variable e Sur les
séries ordonnée suivante les puissances d’une fonction donnée, publicados no
jornal Journal für die reine und angewandte mathematik,ou, como é mais
conhecido, Journal de Crelle. Nestes artigos, Gomes Teixeira desbrava o
caminho para aquele que ficou conhecido como o Teorema de Teixeira e
pode-se assistir a uma crescente sofisticação e apuro da teoria por ele usada.
É notório que, nos textos originais de Teixeira, não constam as demonstrações
de muitos resultados nem tampouco imagens ilustrativas das descrições por
ele feitas. É por isso que a análise a que nos propusemos, é, na sua essência,
o completar destes vazios, para que se entenda um pouco melhor, a obra de
F. Gomes Teixeira.
ABSTRACT: The main purpose of this dissertation is the analysis of the work of the
portuguese mathematician Francisco Gomes Teixeira, especially in which
concerns the power series expansion of functions. We started by
understanding the importance of this subject during Teixeira's time, in particular
in the journals which he founded: Jornal de Sciencias and the Annaes, and
how it was approached bye the international community. Only then we started
dissecting the mathematics used by Gomes Teixeira. For that we analyzed two
articles: Sur le développement des fonction en série ordonnée suivant les
puissances du sinus et du cosinus de la variable and Sur les séries ordonnée
suivante les puissances d'une fonction donnée, both published in the Journal
für die reine und angewandte mathematik, or Crelle's Journal, as it is more
easily recognized. In these articles, Gomes Teixeira finds his way to what is
known as Teixeira's Theorem and we assist a growing sophistication and
perfectioning of the theory used.
It is notorious that, in Teixeira's original writings, there are no demonstrations of
many results nor figures to illustrate the descriptions he makes. That is why,
the analysis we aim to achieve is, in its essence, the filling of those empty
spaces so that the reader may understand a bit better and faster the work left
by F. Gomes Teixeira.
