Apesar de se tratar de um conceito antigo, cujas primeiras referências escritas
datam do século XI, a Geologia Médica insere-se numa área científica
interdisciplinar emergente e que irá ter um crescimento acelerado num futuro
próximo. Facto que irá indubitavelmente trazer um novo rumo e renovada
importância às Ciências da Terra. Nesse contexto, o objectivo deste trabalho
consistiu em traduzir um glossário, de Geologia Médica, de inglês para
português. Trabalho esse que constitui, deste modo, mais um pequeno
contributo para a divulgação desta área do conhecimento científico.
São já várias as evidências demonstrativas da crescente importância da
Geologia Médica, não apenas em termos puramente científicos mas também
enquanto estudo da interface entre a saúde humana, assim como a de outros
animais, e o ecossistema em que esta se insere. Bons exemplos que poderão
ser apontados consistem no facto de um maior número de estudos geológicos
incluir uma componente de geologia médica, numa altura em que a geologia
médica é leccionada em algumas universidades, a alunos de medicina.
A realização deste trabalho de tradução terminológica contou com a consulta
bibliográfica e terminológica de várias fontes. A variedade de fontes e
multidisciplinaridade das áreas do conhecimento científico abrangido
permitiram confirmar, também na óptica do tradutor, o carácter abrangente da
medicina médica, que se expande bem além da geologia e medicina e abarca
também variadas áreas da biologia, química, física e matemática. E, sob esse
ponto de vista, este trabalho insere-se perfeitamente na variante de saúde e
ciências da vida do mestrado em tradução especializada.
ABSTRACT: Even though Medical Geology is a rather ancient concept of which the oldest
written references date back to the 11th century, it is indeed an emerging and
interdisciplinary field of study that is bound to experience an exponential growth
in the short term. This fact will undoubtedly draw a new path and renewed
relevance to the Earth sciences. This was the context in which this translation
project was devised, with the goal of translating a medical geology glossary
from English into Portuguese. A task that will hopefully provide a small
contribution to make this specific area of scientific knowledge increasingly
heard of.
There is countless evidence showing the growing relevance of Medical
Geology. And this is not strictly limited to a purely scientific sense, but as
means to study the interface between the human (and other animals’) health
and the ecosystem that they inhabit as well. To prove just that we have a
growing number of geological surveys that includes a medical geology
component to its study. While at the same time classes of medical geology are
part of the study programme for medicine students of some universities.
Carrying out this terminology translation project required a wide range of
bibliographic and terminological consult from an assortment of sources. This
source variety and multidisciplinary areas of scientific knowledge that were
covered made it possible to verify (also from a translator’s point of view) the
broad spectrum character of medical geology, expanding well beyond the
borders of geology and medicine and overlapping biology, chemistry, physics
and even mathematics. And it is from this view point that this translation project
fits perfectly in what is the health and life sciences’ branch of this master’s
