A imagem que um potencial visitante possui de um destino assume um importante papel na decisão de visitar ou nao esse destino. O presente estudo envolve dois países que têm uma forte ligação histórica e que foram desenvolvendo fortes relações ao longo dos anos - Portugal e Brasil. Os portugueses são já um importante mercado turístico do Brasil. No entanto, o número de portugueses que visita o Brasil anualmente representa apenas uma pequena percentagem do número de portugueses que residem em Portugal. Um dos objectivos do presente estudo 6 identificar a imagem que os portugueses residentes na região de Aveiro têm do Brasil e de diversas cidades deste pais. Adicionalmente, pretende também avaliar-se a influência da familiaridade com estas cidades brasileiras no desenvolvimento de imagens destas cidades. Finalmente, pretende-se ainda, fornecer orientações para melhorar a imagem que os portugueses residentes na região de Aveiro têm do Brasil e de diversas cidades brasileiras. A concretização desta investigação implicou uma revisão bibliográfica de bibliografia relativa à imagem, à familiaridade com destinos turísticos e as relações históricas existentes entre o Brasil e Portugal. Tendo como base as bibliografias revistas, criou-se um instrumento de pesquisa - um questionário - que foi administrado a uma amostra de portugueses residentes na região de Aveiro. O estudo revela que os portugueses residentes na região de Aveiro têm imagens bastante distintas de diversas cidades brasileiras. Esta pesquisa sugere também que diversas dimensões da familiaridade têm influência na formação de diversas componentes da imagem dos destinos. ABSTRACT: The image that a potential visitor holds of a destination plays a major role in the decision of visiting or not visiting that destination. The present study encompasses two countries that have a strong historic relationship and that have developed strong relationships across the years - Portugal and Brazil. Portuguese are already a very important tourism market of Brazil. However, the number of Portuguese who visit the Brazil per year only represents a small percentage of the number of Portuguese who live in Portugal. One of the objectives of the present study isto identify the image that the Portuguese living in the Aveiro region have of Brazil and of several cities of that country. Additionally, another aim isto evaluate the influence of the familiarity with those cities in the development of images of these cities. Finally, another objective is to provide guidelines to improve the image that the Portuguese living in the Aveiro region have of Brazil and of several Brazilian cities. In order to achieve these objectives a literature review on image, familiarity and on the historic relationships existing between Brazil and Portugal was undertaken. Having this literature review as a base, a research instrument - a questionnaire - has been created and has been administered to a sample of Portuguese living in the Aveiro region. The study reveals that the Portuguese living in the Aveiro region have considerable distinct imaqes of several Brazilian cities.
