Description
Geopolymers are a new class cf alumino-silicate materials. Because of their non-inflammability and thermal stability they could present a valuable alternative for epoxy adhesives in extemally bonded reinforcements. Geopolymerisation is a chemical reaction that is processed in strong alkaline environment between the oxides that are present in different alumino-silicates, yielding polymeric Si-O-AI-O bonds. The purpose of this research is te study geopolymers to be used as an adhesive for externally bonded reinforcement. Metakaolin and fly ash based geopolymers were tested. The best mechanical properties, like compressive and flexural strengths, were achieved with a composition with of 100 % metakaolin (source material) and a sodium silicate solution - sodium hydroxide solution ratio of 2,3 by mass (alkaline solution).
