Los mitos de fundación del Estado parecen desempeñar con frecuencia un papel central en los discursos “etnicizantes” y nacionalistas africanos. También entre los aruwund del sur de la República Democrática del Congo y pueblos emparentados el complejo de tradiciones orales que relata la llegada de un cazador extranjero y la subsiguiente fundación de la realeza se invoca para reivindicar una identidad “lunda” más vasta, capaz de congregar grupos política y lingüísticamente distintos. Este artículo pretende defender que lo que hace de estas tradiciones instrumentos particularmente aptos para formar parte de discursos identitarios no deriva del hecho de que constituyan una referencia a una experiencia histórica compartida, sino de la naturaleza de estas narraciones que, por su propia estructura, constituyen mecanismos ideológicos de construcción de la identidad social. The myths of foundation of the state often play a central role in the African nationalist movements and discourses on ethnicity. This is indeed the case of the Aruwund of southern Democratic Republic of Congo and neighbouring peoples among whom the set of oral traditions narrating the arrival of a foreign hunter and subsequent foundation of kingship is evoked to claim a wider “lunda” identity, one able to congregate groups distinct at both political and linguistic levels. This paper argues that what makes these traditions instruments particularly suited to integrate discourses on ethnicity and promote ethnic mobilisation does not result from the fact that they refer to a shared historical experience, an experience of a past that happened, but is due to the nature itself of these narratives whose structure constitutes an ideological mechanism allowing for the conceptualisation of social identity.
