O principal objectivo deste artigo é o de assinalar os 150 anos do nascimento do biólogo escocês Patrick Geddes, debruçando-se na sua vida e obra, que em muito se cruzam com os caminhos da história da geografia como disciplina científica, e em particular com o desenvolvimento e evolução do planeamento urbano e regional. Primeiramente são abordadas as influências científicas que recebeu, seguidas da discussão de alguns dos mais importantes contributos científicos que deixou, como sejam a Outlook Tower como observatório científico e Museu-Índice do mundo, os conceitos de Cidade-Região, de Secção de Vale e de Conurbação. Por fim são brevemente analisadas as influências que deixou em diversas pessoas, nomeadamente Mumford, Herbertson, Fleure e Abercrombie. The principal aim of this paper is to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Scottish biologist Patrick Geddes, by approaching his life and works, which in many ways cross the paths of the history of geography as a scientific discipline, and in particular those of the development and evolution of urban and regional planning. Firstly I investigate the scientific influences which Geddes has received, followed by a discussion of some of the most important scientific contributions he has given, such as the Outlook Tower as a scientific observatory and Museum-Index of the World, the concepts of City-Region, Valley Section and Conurbation. Finally I briefly analyse the influences which Geddes has produced in various people, namely Mumford, Herbertson, Fleure and Abercrombie.
