Dissertação de mestrado em Economia Este trabalho tenciona analisar a relação entre as características de um clube
profissional europeu e o valor das transferências de jogadores profissionais de futebol.
Como esta é uma área pouco desenvolvida, a pesquisa tem como base uma pergunta
essencial: Será que aspectos ligados a um clube influenciam o valor das transferências
de jogadores de futebol? Para tentar responder a esta questão central, analisaram-se
dados referentes às épocas de 2006/2007 até 2012/2013 do futebol português e do
espanhol, fazendo depois uma extensão a ligas como a francesa, inglesa, italiana e
alemã. As variáveis explicativas testadas são referentes às contratações e vendas de
jogadores, número de sócios, capacidade do estádio, ano de fundação do clube,
títulos, pontos e posição na época anterior, participação em competições europeias,
assistência média de espectadores e percentagem de jogadores nacionais. Para testar
o modelo foram usados métodos econométricos, nomeadamente por OLS, efeitos
fixos, efeitos aleatórios e GMM. Os resultados sugerem que existe um grau de
correlação significativo entre as variáveis ligadas aos clubes e as transferências de
jogadores, sugerindo assim que dimensões como a idade de um clube, a presença nas
competições europeias e o volume das assistências nos estádios influencia a política de
transferências dos clubes em análise. This paper intends to examine the relationship between the characteristics of a club
and the value of the soccer players’ transfers fees. As this is an undeveloped area, the
research is based on an essential question: Do the aspects of a club influence the value
of the transfers of its players? Trying to answer this central question, we analysed data
from the seasons 2006/2007 to 2012/2013 of Portuguese and Spanish football leagues;
then, we extended to leagues such as the French, Italian and German. The tested
explanatory variables are related to stadium capacity, year of foundation of the club,
titles, points and last season’s position, participation in European competitions,
average attendance of spectators and percentage of national players . To test this
model we used econometric methods, including OLS, fixed effects, random effects and
GMM. The results suggest that there is a significant degree of correlation between the
variables linked to clubs and players transfers fees, suggesting that the age of each
team, the presence of that team in European Champions League, and the size of
audiences influence the policy of transfers of the observed clubs.
